It will be a strange scene next August when the Advance High School volleyball team takes the court and Addi Carlton isn’t anywhere to be seen.

In many ways, Saturday’s volleyball match for Advance High School was an all too familiar scene.

The Advance High School volleyball squad has several new faces on it this season, but the ultimate results have pretty much been the same old, same old. The Hornets will play for their sixth MSHSAA Class 1 State Championship in the past seven seasons today after they knocked off Santa Fe 25-16, 25-14, 21-25, 25-12 on Friday at the Show Me Center in the semifinal round of the state tournament.

ADVANCE — The Advance Hornets volleyball team is headed back to its home away from home. At least that's what Cape Girardeau's Show-Me Center has got to feel like to the Hornets after six trips to the final four in the last seven seasons. There is little doubt that the athletes on the Bernie High School volleyball squad are true “student-athletes.” However, it appears that the current group cares little about studying history if you assess the Mules’ recent postseason play.

The Advance High School volleyball squad still has three more steps to take successfully before it defends its 2023 MSHSAA Class 1 Volleyball state championship. However, the Hornets (21-11-2) are already defending – literally – at a very high level this postseason.

ZALMA – With 21 trips to the MSHSAA State Finals, including seven state championships on its resume, there isn’t much that can rattle those within the Advance High School volleyball program.

The Advance volleyball team will continue their two-time state title defense after defeating Leopold in four sets to win the Class 1 District 3 championship on Tuesday, Oct. 29 in Zalma. The Hornets were seemingly in for a long night after dropping the opening set 25-20 to the Wildcats. The Advance High School volleyball program has averaged over 31 victories during a six-year stretch in which it has won five MSHSAA Class 1 state championships. This season, the Hornets have labored to an 18-11-2 mark, which includes defeats in five of their last eight matches. However, don’t include veteran Advance coach Erin Hoffman among those overly concerned about those numbers as the postseason looms.
