High School Football Forum: Gridiron Pick'em Week 1

*
Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Aug 15, 2017, at 11:54 AM:

Gridiron Pick’em season 5 is upon us! Can you believe it is already mid-August? We’ve been going strong for four straight football seasons, with participation growing every year. I think this year can be even better! We have some exciting area teams to watch this year.

Again, I want to thank everyone who plays this game and takes the time to participate! I really enjoy putting it together, and I think it gives us a great reason to follow other area teams that may not be our own, and root for other teams and players. This format also gives us a list of top games to follow each week. . I appreciate each and every one of you that takes the time to play along with the pick’em, and have helped it to grow to over 100 participates last year.

As I do at the beginning of every year, for those who don’t know how the pick’em works, I will take a brief moment to explain. Each week I list a few games, of which you will comment and pick the winners, and you receive points for every game that you get correct. After the games have concluded, I will tally the results and post those on Semoball on their own results thread with a running tally. Please feel free to have football related discussions on these threads as well if you so choose but abide by Semoball rules please. Just like last year the winner will receive a $25 Walmart gift card. I hope everyone enjoys the Gridiron Pick’em, good luck, and thanks for participating!

Our defending champion is Butkus. Let’s see if he can go back-to-back. He had a great season of picking last year!

Also don’t forget to follow our twitter page @BuckMajor3 or search BuckMajor Sports! Certain things like results and updates may be posted on there.

First a few rules:

The picks have to be in by the time the game starts.

If you pick an upset, and you are the only one that picks that team to win and they win, you will receive a 2 point bonus. If two people pick it you split the bonus.

The winner each week receives a two point bonus

So without further ado, here are this week’s games:

- Since this is the first week, I’ve noticed it takes people a bit to get into the swing of things. Therefore there will not be as many games this week, and points won’t be as high, so those that get started late, or miss the first week are not way behind in points. This will be a good week to get everyone into the swing of things.

FRIDAY, AUG 18th

1. Portageville vs. Caruthersville (1 point)

2. Malden vs. NMCC ( 1 point)

3. Charleston vs. Sikeston (1 point)

4. Ste Genevieve vs. Dexter (1 point)

5. Thayer vs. Hayti (1 point)

GAME OF THE WEEK (Please pick winner and final score for a tiebreaker)

6. Mt. View Liberty vs. Cape Central (2 points)

  • Tribe Man, that would be Bleed Green and he is a stand-up guy no matter what else you may think of him. He won't make any excuses for Ste. Gen.

Congrats to Dexter on the big win! I was never so happy to be wrong about one of my picks.

  • Preach didn't Dexter bring back a lot of people this year? So I'm thinking they will be pretty good

  • Charleston better than expected or Sikeston not very good??

  • What little I saw was that dexter runs a pair of big backs at you, both 6 feet and over 200 pounds

  • No disrespect to Dexter but SG isn't very good

  • I know they got beat last night but I was impressed with New Madrids line

Our line is probably at the best that it's been in a number of years. Finically some kids with size, and creating a brand new weight lifting facility have helped tremendously. Finally kids are excited about getting back in the weight room. And it's young kids we are talking about at NMCC. They have to have so many freshmen and sophomores contributing and starting that they aren't able to fill out a JV team this year. But the freshmen class is very promising and will get varsity experience all year.

  • A lot of people will see that score and underestimate that line and they will surprise some teams.

The season is NOT as fun when SG is not doing very well. Honestly.

  • TFA, Dexter did return a lot of starters, but coming off a 2-9 season where we were giving up 35 points per game? But glad to see the Bearcats step up Friday night. That was our first win over Ste. Gen in 5 years! Huge district win too!

  • Well we lost our biggest threat in Faulkner he moved to Florida so I don't know what to expect from Sikeston but football isn't my game so I don't go to very many games. I may go to the Dexter game but I know I won't go anywhere near the Jackson game.

  • Sad to hear that Faulkner isn't playing for Sikeston anymore. He really was a gamechanger when he was on the field.

  • Looking like its going to be a fun season of football, more parity than usual. How did Kennett look any body see them

  • C'mon TFA. We would love to see you at the Jackson game!😊

  • IP I don't even want to know the score on that game.

  • You never know TFA...

  • IP, With Jax beating Sikeston the past four years of a combined score of 174-7, it is understandable that there wasn't much for TFA to cheer about. Jax did not, and will not, run up the score due to the respect for Sikeston's excellent head coach being a Jax graduate and resident.

  • Tribe man, Kennett came out Friday night a bit flat in my opinion and took some time to get going. Skills play was good, but they are better on the ground than in the air overall. The big men on the line played really well and should be key to more Indian victories this season. Good luck!
