Even though Perryville beat Dexter easily the first go around, I would bet it will be a dog fight this time.

First two boys games, and two upsets. Even though the last one was a small one, still a ranked upset. Kennett only lost to Cape by single digits the first match-up, 8 points I believe, any chance they can keep the upset train rolling tonight?

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Mar 1, 2016, at 8:13 AM
  • Kennett is a very dangerous team. This could be the last night for their coach. I expect his kids to leave everything on the floor. Could be an upset brewing.

  • Bulletin board material for Sikeston. A Cape mom AND dad guaranteed a Cape victory Friday night. That is not a lie. Heard it directly from their mouth as I was sitting right behind them and as they walked away. Looked at Thatch's parents, I assume those were his parents because he looks just like them, and said it again. Shake my head.

-- Posted by Redsandguy on Tue, Mar 1, 2016, at 9:02 PM
  • Also, I don't know who the Sikeston heckler was, bald guy, but I think he was getting under their skin a little.

  • Reds,

For some reason I think you are making that up. I'd love to know who the parents were that said that. For you to not even know who Thatchs parents are, but yet you say parents of CT were mouthing after sneaking past a solid Kennent team. Hard to believe

    -- Posted by BobbyKite22 on Tue, Mar 1, 2016, at 9:18 PM
  • Redsandguy----What a ridiculous post. You think TEAMS are responsible for what fans say? Players and teams understand every game is a challenge. If a player says that then I agree but not from an adult sitting their a$$ in the stands.

-- Posted by Redsandguy on Tue, Mar 1, 2016, at 11:26 PM
  • Who cares if his parents said that or not? Doesn't mean a thing. I applaud them for supporting their son and his team. And whether they said that or not, it will have no bearing on the game whatsoever. So again, who cares?

  • LU--was at that game tonight, never saw two teams so evenly matched. Cville might have shot the fouls a little better and rebounded a bit better but they both got after it. Two very good teams, shame they had to meet this early in state playoffs. Hats off to both of these teams.

Jays played a good game, just couldn't put enough runs together. They will reload and be right back at it next year that you can be certain of. I know the Tigers face an uphill battle from here on out the only thing that concerns me is depth..not conditioning wise but foul wise. We have stepped up our half court defense just gotta see what the next team holds and what the refs are going to let you play with.

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Wed, Mar 2, 2016, at 10:59 PM
  • Congratulations cville, you earned it that's for sure. Alston the pg is a sure fire all stater, he controlled the game from start to finish and he was clutch 4th ausrter. 2back to back 3's to start the 4th. Cville will make it to como, they defend, they play hard and they too, can shoot it. Two evenly matched teams but ctown was 3-16 in 2nd half from the line but cville was 12-14 difference in the game, we lost by 12. Lamonte has those tigers hungry. Go get it cville! I got cville by 7 over Whitfield

  • Ste Gen 44 - Farmington 34

First ever district championship for Dragons in basketball.

-- Posted by Bogey Man on Thu, Mar 3, 2016, at 8:46 PM
  • It's not Ste. Gen's first ever, but it's their first since the Truman Administration.

-- Posted by semohoops on Thu, Mar 3, 2016, at 11:01 PM
  • Yes, it is the first ever. The 1947 team played in a state playoff game called a "regional". I got the story from a member of the '47 team, SGHS Hall of Fame member Harold Baechle, on how that came about.

At that time, teams were invited to the state playoffs at the end of the season. Whichever team from the SEMO/Mineral Area that was invited could not go for some reason. SG went in their place and lost "regional" game.

-- Posted by Bogey Man on Fri, Mar 4, 2016, at 6:42 AM
  • Ah I see. Well that's interesting. I didn't know they did it like that. So maybe not a district title, but we can say their first playoff appearance since '47. Is that accurate?

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Mar 4, 2016, at 10:41 AM
  • Yes that would be accurate. Minor detail, but being reported wrong by the media. This is in fact the first district title for SG.

Regionals were big deals back then. Was much harder to win a regional than it is to win a district now. There were just 8 regionals in the state (although I think StL and KC sometimes used a different method for choosing their regional representatives), and the winners of the regionals all advanced to the site of the state tournament, which started with the quarterfinals.

Back in '47, there was only 1 state championship--no classes. There were between 550 and 600 schools competing for one title. Teams had to compete just to advance to the regional. Teams first played in sub-regionals that had as many as 16 teams each. There were 8 sub-regionals in each region. Both first and second place teams in the sub-regional advanced to the regional. So 16 teams advanced to the regional, and the regional winner went on to the quarterfinals. To emerge from a regional, a team often had to win 8 games in a row, or go 7-1, with its loss coming in the sub-regional final.

After that, a regional champ had to win 3 more to become the state champ. So the state champ generally reeled off 10 or 11 wins in a row in the post-season. I'm not sure whether a team that lost in the sub-regional final ever won a state title. Don't think so but could be wrong.

The smallest school to win the title in the no-class divisions format, based on my own research, was 1944 Bismarck, which had around 120-130 students total. In the quarterfinals, Bismarck knocked off Cleveland High out of St. Louis, which was then considered one of the best ever from the area. I think Cleveland was the largest school in StL with around 2000 students or so.

  • Awesome info unclegrubworm! Sounds kinda like an iconic movie to me!!

-- Posted by IndianPride on Fri, Mar 4, 2016, at 6:05 PM
  • Don't doubt you grubworm but I don't believe Ste. Gen. won any kind of sub regional in '47 to advance to a regional. The gentleman from the '47 team was pretty sharp, and said SG was a little better than a .500 team. But maybe SG was in a sub regional, didn't finish first or second, and maybe got invited when the first or second place team couldn't go to a regional game. Just going on what the gentleman said, and he did seem to know what he was about.

Certainly not doubting your source, Bogey. It could've happened as you speculate.

I mainly wanted to explain how a regional back then differed from today's district.

They got rid of the sub-regionals sometime in the 50s, but kept the regionals, which were much larger than most of today's districts.

A couple of other differences in the '47 game: a coach was not supposed to communicate with his team except during timeouts, and a team had the option of taking the ball out of bounds instead of shooting a free throw. On a 2-shot foul, the fouled team could decide to shoot them both or shoot one and then take the ball out of bounds.

At least this was the case in '48. This situation occurred in the final seconds of the '48 regional title game between Delta and Puxico. (Puxico elected to shoot both shots.) It's described in Matt Chaney's book, My Name is Mister Ryan.

Looking through the coaches poll, 4 of the top 10 have already lost in districts with one more left to be decided (Rolla against Helias). Cape lost to Sikeston, Jennings lost to Riverview Gardens, Miller Career got ousted by St. Mary's, and Westminster was upset by University City.

Also, mighty Webster Groves was taken down by SLUH. This should be a little sigh of relief for Jackson...except for the fact that they now play the team who beat the team everyone deemed as so amazing. Goodluck to the Indians though!

    -- Posted by bulldog21forever on Sat, Mar 5, 2016, at 12:23 AM
  • Jackson playing SLUH will be just as tough as playing Webster Groves. SLUH has played a very tough schedule, playing Chicago teams, East St. Louis teams, playing Chaminade twice and CBC twice.

They have a guard, Nester that will knock down 3's if you give him an inch. The other guard is a slasher and very quick.

My prediction is SLUH by 20 over Jackson.

-- Posted by Slammer on Sat, Mar 5, 2016, at 8:40 AM
  • *

I agree Slammer about SLUH being just as tough as playing WG. But to me, there is just something about the team everyone expects to win losing early, kind of like "Wow, we don't have to play this giant." When in reality, they obviously got beat by an extremely capable team. Similar to march madness when a lower seed wins and the team they play expected the higher seed to win. Jackson will have to bring their game no doubt.

Craziest game I have ever heard about. Caruthersvile drives 3 hours, has an hour and a half power outage delay, has a half court buzzer beater send the game to OT, and then lose. Unbelievable.

Heck of a game regardless!! Hate that it didn't go Caruthersville's way.

  • Really wanted Caruthersville to win

  • Me too! And all SEMO teams. Glad we have a bunch still with chances!!

  • I agree Buck. Like someone said earlier it would be cool if someone was filming it. Would be good for ESPN. Only could be better if Caruthersville won.

I have no clue how any of this works, but is it possible to put this game under some sort of protest? It was a state quarterfinal game with less than ideal circumstances. I know that it isn't very likely, and I certainly don't want to get the pot really stirred up but I'm curious if anyone has any serious knowledge regarding the subject?

I should also add that I only thought of this because I saw someone mention it on the fabulous world of Twitter.

  • C-ville just had a lucky year and I knew they would not win any more games after the Charleston win. They just got lucky and beat Charleston twice on a down year. I can not see them making it this far again for at least another three years. From now on out the road to the final is going to be through Charleston. Charleston was a very young team this year. For the next three years they should be considered the favorites to win the class 3 championship. Mark my words. Charleston had a very young team this year and will be even hungrier this coming basketball season.

Just remember, we don't rebuild, we reload!!

  • You don't get lucky and beat coach Farmer twice.....you have to be good

  • Caruthersville was better than Charleston this year. Caruthersville will be good for the next few years. Class 3 in the Bootheel should be good.

bluejaypride you are hilarious. You say you knew we would not win another game after we beat Charleston but it took a desperation 40 ft 3 pointer at the end of regulation just to tie the game up. Nobody had us even being able to compete with Whitfield we frustrated Watson held him to 12 points I believe and it took the rest of their team to step up. Most of us here congratulated the Jays on a good season and we have a lot of respect for your program there is no use in hating on our team. You can bet your butt next year will be a battle between the Tigers and Jays we return everyone except Alston and have quite a few moving up from JV that will contribute next year..so Charleston was not the only team that was very young!!

Not a well thought out post, bluejaypride. If you had paid any attention to the rosters, you'd have seen that C'ville only had 2 seniors on the roster and Saxony only had one. The Jays had 4 that played a considerable amount of time; so, of the three, the Jays have more holes to fill. Class 3 will have some quality teams, next year, but to say the road to CoMo runs through Charleston doesn't hold much water for next year; in fact, if Charleston wins District and Sectional, next year (assuming districts basically remain the same following realignment), I'd consider them to be upsets. Will the Jays be good? Absolutely, but C'ville and Saxony will be the teams to beat.

bulldogforever....I would venture a guess that MSHSAA was involved in the decision to move the game; if they weren't, I would think they would have to make a post-game ruling as to whether the game was legitimate. If that were the case, I'd say their ruling would be to allow the outcome as officials acted in a reasonable manner in selecting the best available option at their disposal.

I would like to add that it has been proven recently that any team from our area can beat another on any given night. We are all solid in basketball in this area in any given year. I am proud of C-ville, Gideon, and all the young men and women that participate in athletics. I am especially proud of how it is not unusual that more area people are going to college rather it be through athletics or academics. This is the more important score to me.

  • Don't it sure wasn't 2002, ritter beat Charleston in the quarters that yr in park hills. They both were class2 then

  • Straight....I totally agree. We have some VERY good players/athletes in this area. Getting more kids to get a higher education should be the goal. If the athlete can play for pay....that's a bonus. However, the stats say only a few are fortunate to do that. That's why the degree is extremely important. Great post, Straight.

  • Omg Bluejay pride! Cville proved twice they were better than us. You beat a Charleston team twice and once at their place and again win it really counts then they've earned it. C'ville will be tough next yr and Saxony, Charleston too but it depends on how much our now freshman develop over the summer, with Jay's having one Jr on the roster this yr, I'm thinking the yr after they'll be a force for sure! The big question that's looming is that was this yr farmers last yr. Word around town is in fact it was. Idk but either way we'll be fine. Jamarcus Williams has shown he can get the job done. They're alot of young coaches in semo area, thst has come back to coach at their alma mater. That's really cool bell at cville, day/Jenkins at nmcc, Hadley at bell city. Has anyone in the area win a state title as a player and a coach at the same school?

Well, I guess Danny was not actually on a state championship team.....a 2nd place as a junior and a 4th place as a senior

Coach Day has a 1st as a player and a 3rd as coach. Also Holifield at Sikeston and Garmon at Kennett for young guys who are back at their alma mater.

Wow! That's the only way I can describe last night's game and happenings. Crazy!

Congrats to my Tigers on a great season! They improved so much from earlier in the season. Coach Bell is just what this program needs at Cville. Couldn't think of a more deserving person for the job. He loves his team, his town and his players and it showed every night they took the court. Mark my word, Cville will be back next year. They lose Alston but they return everyone else, including several guards coming up from JV who are very good. Sure going to miss Tyrone though. He's definitely one of my favorite Tiger players of all time. GREAT talent. I see Cville having a great season next year. Class 3 will be fun to watch in 2016-2017.

Watson was pretty good. He goes more off his athletic ability than actual skill or knowledge of the game. 3 of his fouls we're him trying to bulldoze his way through 2 defenders picking up the charge. I guess he wasn't use to the steady pressure. Whitfield has some studs though. Great shooting team. Hats off to them. I can't see them getting past Tolton Catholic though.

Good Luck to all the remaining SEMO teams. Rooting for you guys in COMO and Sikeston and Jackson in Sectionals.

Class 3 is definitely tough this year

I agree, Cheese. As I posted elsewhere, I thought Caruthersville dictated play for the first 3 quarters but just couldn't shake Whitfield. Cville did a great job on Watson and really made the Whitfield halfcourt offense look shaky, which was not entirely unexpected, based on Whitfield's play this year. Watson still has the tendency of trying to do too much instead of letting the game come to him. He's still a developing player. Better Whitfield PG play would help him out.

I saw Tolton wax Ritter Saturday afternoon in Warrenton before driving down to Hillsboro. I don't give Whitfield much of a shot unless the two Porters get into foul trouble. And I think the Tolton PG will give Whitfield fits. I've seen Tolton 3 times this year and that was the best I've seen them. I like Whitfield and hope they find a way to hang in, but it's not going to be easy.
