  • Sikeston has St Gen tomorrow night. Hope they find one especially for senior night. I know we had no homecoming game because of weather.

  • Just curious, where does the name Cooter come from? Is it a family name? That name cracks me up.

Bogey Man on maps from the 1800's Cooter is spelled Coutre' (French). Coutre' in English is coulter or a blade on a plow. It was probably a French family who first settled there and their last name came from farming.

  • Back in the day the instructors in the PE Department at SEMO used Cooter as a textbook example of where we wanted to go coach basketball after graduation. I think the idea was we should worry more about teaching gymnastics, badminton, bowling, etc. than going back to our home towns to save the basketball team.

  • That's some good info on cooter lol, I'm not from cooter but we are trying to build something basketball wise, and we couldn't get a game because we wasn't in school, sucks for our seniors who have worked hard for the 3 yrs I have been here.

  • They do it the right way down at Cooter. History suggests when the time is right they will win big time.

  • Another great town name - Koshkonong - origins??

-- Posted by Bogey Man on Tue, Feb 24, 2015, at 6:24 AM
  • I read about koshkonong somewhere, cant remember the specifics but pretty sure its a Native American name.

Heres one, how about Qulin? Anyone...beuhler?.... Anyone?

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Tue, Feb 24, 2015, at 10:32 AM
  • Koshkonong- Koshkonong was named for its numerous sinkhole ponds and lakes that reminded the construction supervisor of the railroad's favorite duck hunting spot in Wisconsin, Lake Koshkonong.

Qulin was originally named Melville in 1907 but the postal service already had a Melville listed so the postmaster at that time, John Kelly, renamed it using the first letter of his five daughters' names.

    Now, on to basketball...
