  • 86-85 Risco over Gideon. Typical game at Risco, if it's close at all, Risco is going to win. Hate to break it to everybody, but SCC would run Gideon out of the gym.

  • Cape central beat seckman 76-37, or something very close to that. I know we doubled their score and had 4 sophomores and a freshman in for the final 5 minutes while seckman kept 4 of 5 starters in the game until the final buzzer. We let them shoot the ball a little too much. They had one guard who could actually play and he had something like 20 of their 37. TJ had 18, Cox had something around there, and McClanahan had 15. We shot the ball better from behind the arc tonight than we have all year.

  • Gideon played a very good ballgame tonight. They have really improved since the last time I saw them play . I think it ironic that Risco beats Oran by 40 points earlier in the year then when SCC struggles to pull out a win against them its because Oran has improved a lot since then but Risco struggles tonight and instead of us thinking maybe Gideon too has improved we just automatically assume Risco is not any good . I'm not buying it at all . Risco and Gideon always play each other close . Gideon was coming off a tragedy within their community at the time of the first meeting. I'm not saying Risco is the best class 1 team by no means at all or that even here lately they are playing like a top 10 team but let's give Gideon a little credit here as we do Oran. They are a tough and scrappy team !!

-- Posted by jpaawhite on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 9:41 PM
  • Risco fans were all over SCC when they only beat Oran by 12. Now you are saying Oran is improved, did not hear that before.

-- Posted by igobybob on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 9:48 PM
  • Bob I'm not all Risco fans ! There are at least 2 or 3 others ! I've never said that Oran hasn't improved because its obvious they have .

Given away by the officials in last 2:30 is an excuse. You can't give and excuse, and then say no excuse. you were the home team for Pete's sake! I doubt it was the officials fault, especially if you were leading by 12 at one point. Sounds like NMCC just turned it on in the fourth, and played to win.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:00 PM
  • *

Ronnie, the officials didn't give that game away, not even close. When a player drives the baseline, goes up, puts his knee in the defenders chest, a defender whose feet were set in cement... it's an offensive foul.

When a player goes up for a rebound then falls down w/ the ball, it's a travel...

Anytime there are calls in the final minute of a game, the losing team gets someone to blame..

SC was up by 12 in the 4th quarter, instead of putting NMCC away, you let them back in it and lost the game. This whole "the game was given away by the refs, but we never should have been in that position anyway" is just trying to deflect the blame elsewhere...

-- Posted by secretagentman on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:01 PM
  • *

    CORRECTION...

It is like 12 wins, 3 SHOULD HAVE won, 1 The Refs cost us the game, 2 almost won and 0 Losses!

    I get it now!

-- Posted by Haterade on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:03 PM
  • GSP, Holcomb actually beat Gideon by 13. Considering Holcomb isn't even state ranked, much less have they been number 1, I don't believe they are overrated.

-- Posted by bleacherking on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:03 PM
  • The Risco/Gideon game was very competitive tonight. I was very much an outsider at this game with no real interest in who won or lost but the calls were very inconsistent (or should I say consistently went Risco's way). If there were Academy Awards given to players who do the best acting job in falling BEFORE contact is made then Risco would win every award. Then you have the end of the game, two straight possessions Risco player takes a straight route to the rim with a Gideon player waiting and it is a block, both at under 20 seconds, once again very consistent. To bad High School rules do not award technicals for FLOPPING, if they did game would not have been close.

-- Posted by MoArk on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:05 PM
  • I do have a great idea, Risco and SCC should drop one of their power house non conference regular season games and play each other every year. SCC could drop Charleston or Notre Dame and Risco could drop Marquand or Richland. It would be fun to watch them play every year.

-- Posted by igobybob on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:07 PM
  • MoArk, once again we agree on an issue I've been talking about for a long time. Nice to hear it from somebody who is unbiased to the situation.

C'mon, Ronnie. Don't you get it? You set yourself up, then personally challenge everyone with "just leave your real name" when they poke fun at you.

-- Posted by birdfan on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:11 PM
  • I agree Bob !! I'm sure at this rate SCC will be dropping a few of those teams ! Until Otto Porter III arrives !!

-- Posted by jpaawhite on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:12 PM
  • 13 points is hardly a thumping. i know from reading your posts that the state polls are important, but im sure the kids and coaches at holcomb understand that polls dont earn you respect. they are doing that with their play.

-- Posted by GSP on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:13 PM
  • @gsp If it wasn't for a tech for hanging on the rim from Dominique Walker that Portageville North Pem game was about to be a Portageville blowout. But excusses are excusses.

-- Posted by paulbd on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:13 PM
  • To be honest we were just tired of hearing about an average/slightly above average SC team before you even got on here.

Ya ya ya sideline I know it was seckman but our threes weren't wide open tonight and frankly we have been horrid shooting the ball from anywhere further than 15 feet until tonight.

-- Posted by CapeAlum on Tue, Jan 24, 2012, at 10:13 PM
  • *

Don't hold your breath! There's probably a Porter, a Timmons, or a Blissett that'll arrive on the scene in due time.

I actually think SC has a pretty solid team, the run a crisp offense, shoot well, block out, pass, their scorer(s) are good at creating shots, etc.

they just aren't world beaters, they are a good solid team for the area and can probably beat any team on any given night, sans maybe Sikeston or the factory (yes i know they played c-town close in the xmas tourney), but most others they would give fits (give fits doesn't mean "win every game"). I was looking at their Bball banners tonight, it's been a while since they hung any so if they're having a good year and stacking up a few wins, i say hey, be proud.

FYI - they (SC) celebrated #24's 1000th point tonight, congrats, he is definitely a solid ball player so i see how he racked up that impressive total.

  • I was at the SC game and am writing about it on deadline now. No dirtiness at all. Couple huge calls did go against SC, whether they were the right or wrong call is of course in the eye of the beholder. Ronnie has been suspended. We don't arrange fights or unpleasant meetups or whatever you want to call it on semoball.

I've got to get back to writing or I'm going to miss deadline so I don't have time to find the perfect words at the moment. Thanks for understanding.

  • MoArk and Bleacherking you guys are unbelievable if you think there is one ref in SEMO that would actually give RISCO an advantage by making calls or not making calls in thier favor, I guess you have seen Bigfoot, and The Loch Ness Monster, a UFO,and you believed Orson Wells radio broadcast of" War of The Worlds". But guess what they are all just not true( well maybe the ufo) By the way the three Refs at Risco Tuesday night were all from Cape and sent by the Semo association, so yeah I am sure they were intentionally helping Risco, they probably have businesses up there that they rely on the Risco Population to frequent and support, and our Coaching staff probably runs around with all the other refs, and plays golf with them and goes out and has fun with them on the weekend . And then there is our Anglelic Fans that would make any referee in thier right mind second guess his call and make sure it goes the Tigers way because of all the love that is bestowed on them from the bleachers. And Risco has been such a powerhouse in the past that most referees just give them the benefit of the doubt about most calls you know they think in thier minds hey thats "RISCO" they must be doing it right you know like they do SCC and Charleston, Portageville ,maybe Vashon and teams like that. Come by any time and watch some video and you can point out all the places where you think Risco was given a call that they should not have been,(it is just too funny typing that)( I would pay to see the both of you in there doing that)or better yet come to the game and sit with me, that would be good....

-- Posted by GSP on Wed, Jan 25, 2012, at 7:48 PM
  • Yes, our stands were barren; well the home side in mid game was about average, the away side which maybe had 40 people.

Yes we had a couple wide open threes but I'd say 75% were contested. That is partially because of how long it takes our guys to shoot the ball after they catch it.

I was wondering if that was the home side or not.

  • Gideon would beat Leopold EASILY? Comments like that are part of the reason why some of you Risco fans are getting the 3rd degree on here. That's just silly to say that they would do it EASILY.

-- Posted by GSP on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 6:43 AM

  • Sikeston got ahead by 20 points before Cville came all the way back to take the lead late in the 3rd quarter. Sikeston got the lead and Cville got it back again. Sikeston made a good run in the 4th quarter and Cville cut the lead all the way back to 4 points but Cville just missed too many free throws down the stretch and Sikeston made them all. It was a great game to watch, very fun for all the fans there on both sides. Two good teams that show great sportsmanship and play very hard. Good luck to Sikeston the rest of the season.

-- Posted by chelco on Sun, Jan 29, 2012, at 12:13 AM
  • I'm a Holcomb fan, so maybe I'm biased. I believe Risco will beat North Pem by 30. I knew we would be good, Risco would be good, and Gideon would be good. Gideon's jv won the conf tournament like 3 years in a row. I seriously didn't think North Pem would be any good this year. Their JV wasn't any good last year and they graduated everyone on varsity except for Maclin. They are like 14-3 or something, 13-4, dunno. I've seen them play a couple of times and yes they are a one man show. Pretty impressive winning that many games when I can't even name anyone on their team except for 23 and every team has 3 guys guarding him all game long. I think we have the best shot at winning the conference tournament. The small teams don't have an answer for big Jamie Massey 6'7". And we are a lot more than just him. Thanks!

    -- Posted by GoHornets84 on Sun, Jan 29, 2012, at 1:17 PM
  • @GoHornets84 That is not true about Gideon's JV winning the Tri-County conference tournament like 3 years ina a row, Clarkton's JV won the regular season and tournament last year, and they defeated Holcomb in the tournament championship. This year they are 12-1, with the only loss being to Scott County Central by 13 or so points the first game of the season in the Bell City JV tournament.

-- Posted by kdjones on Sun, Jan 29, 2012, at 6:00 PM
  • Yeah, I know that about last year. But I think the 3 previous years Gideon won it. I was just pointing out that they have a lot of talent that is on varsity now from those groups. Gideon should beat North Pem easily as well. NP is just too small. Smaller than Risco. Hopefully we can run into Risco for a third time in the county tournament. It's always a great game!
