High School Basketball Forum: Sikeston Bulldogs Basketball

*
Posted by Haterade on Mon, Nov 29, 2010, at 2:48 PM:

The Sikeston Bulldogs began another season with high expectations tomorrow night at Blytheville Arkansas. With the Sikeston team finishing their last two seasons a win away from the Final 4, I would have to say that this could be the year. Do I think Sikeston is good enough to win a State Championship this season? (YES) Do I think that it will happen? (TO EARLY TO TELL) I look forward to another Sikeston team with 20+ wins and a bench as deep as Lake Baikal!

Questions:

Rebounding- can the undersized Dogs box out and control the boards.

Free Throw Shooting- Every year this ends up shooting us in the foot. I think this season that could turn around but never know until game situations take over.

I do feel that this is the season for the Dogs to make it back to Columbia but a long season will let me know more.

GOOD LUCK DOGS!!!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Just a little news from the rest of the state: two teams who were considered among the preseason favorites this year Borgia and Soldan have both already lost a game. If Sikeston can come out of the gate strong, this may be the year that they are the favorite in the state.

  • It will all come down to Sikeston being able to win a "BIG" game hasn't happened in the past but this is a new year and new team.

I wouldn't say they "Can't" win the big game. I would say that Sikeston-SCC was a big game. I'd say defeating Notre Dame after losing to them during the regular season with the talent that team had was a big game. They've just been stuck up against the best team in the state during the quarters the last two years. It's tough to beat a team like the one Borgia had.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Mon, Nov 29, 2010, at 3:24 PM
  • Borgia is no longer on that side of the bracket. If Sikeston can get past ND in district then they have a very good chance. They would meet Borgia in the finals.

  • Sikestons 2 main weaknesses from last year was rebounding and mid-range jumpshots. If they can improve those 2 areas with the depth, defense and the athletes they have, they should have no problem winning big games.

    -- Posted by Fatboy1972 on Mon, Nov 29, 2010, at 6:06 PM
  • I know we'll bet better at shooting this year, and as for the rebounding we'll see. i think if we realize what sikeston would have to work on coach holifeild would already be 2 steps in front of us..

If corey will drop set dunk on cape.. It'd make my year

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Mon, Nov 29, 2010, at 6:26 PM
  • I think that C. Porter will contribute to rebounding a lot, as he'll be getting a lot more playing time this year than he did last year. As for the rest of the team, they're going to be smaller than most of their competition, but they were like that last year and never really had any problems with rebounds.

And free throws have never been good with Sikeston so I don't expect anything different this year.

-- Posted by thepurpleturtle on Mon, Nov 29, 2010, at 11:43 PM
  • Sikeston's Free throw shooting will go up this year I guarentee it, the 2 worst free throw shooters graduated and these Bulldogs can shoot more than outside of 5 feet.

    -- Posted by tlks2much on Tue, Nov 30, 2010, at 8:05 AM
  • Corey size makes him one of the best rebounders and can box most be out, like he did to tolbert in the DC last year..

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Tue, Nov 30, 2010, at 8:18 AM
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt hillcrest in class 4 now? Wouldnt borgia have to beat them, or them beat borgia to have to get to the championship? They have to be a big class four school right?

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Tue, Nov 30, 2010, at 8:28 AM
  • *

Yeah, I've been told they moved down in the last cycle. I think this may be a reloading year for Borgia but with a sample size of three games, you can't know for sure. That is a really good Hillcrest team coming in though.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Tue, Nov 30, 2010, at 9:11 AM
  • Sikeston will be able to get a look at Soldan and Hillcrest at the PB Showdown, other teams playing include Overton, Liberty Tech, North Pulaski, Tupelo and Imagine Prep.

  • Corey Porter "drop set dunking" on Cape.....Bahahahahahahahaha Can he even dunk period....... You know hes going to have 3 guys that are 6'5 in the post with him right?

Sikeston isn't in the PB Showdown. They are playing in the St. Dominic Tournament over Christmas break.

I am glad this thread hasn't been topic-napped yet!

I am wondering alot about Cape Central this season. All I hear is they are big and have a point guard that is the second coming of Allen Iverson. I do believe that Sikeston will beat Cape this season... (SHOULD HAVE LAST SEASON)!

Are there any other schools in the area that will contend for a chance to go to Columbia...

I know SCC will have a great chance in Class 1

    Sikeston in Class 4

    any other?

-- Posted by Haterade on Tue, Nov 30, 2010, at 3:34 PM
  • Whoever comes out of Class 3 District 1 will have an easy road. (Caruthersville, Charleston, and Kennett)

    -- Posted by USC_2860 on Tue, Nov 30, 2010, at 3:54 PM
  • What side of the bracket would soldan and hillcrest be on? They are pretty close to each other right?

and yes corey can dunk, just another reason why he was one of the best lineman in the state.. He's an athlete.. but lets not get this started again

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Tue, Nov 30, 2010, at 7:35 PM

I would let this stay on topic but 3 things already said have blown my mind

    1. Rather corey can drop step dunk or not, who cares its not gonna happen in a game against anybody good

    2. idk how youre gonna say only 1 of capes 3 big guys is a "player" id take any of them over corey

    3. Don't even start with the sikeston shoulda won last year nonsense

-- Posted by JungleStud on Tue, Nov 30, 2010, at 9:47 PM
  • No ones said anything about last years matchup? So get out behind that scapegoat.. When it does happen( because your predictions have been so right before... Not) you'll have to shut up yet again..

And to everyone except SemoSports and junglechoad.. I think sikeston answered the question on rebounding.. everyone was pullin down boards.. but that 1st half was to be expected with 4 days or so of practice.. a 51 point second half? This is gonna be a good year.. ALOT of depth

Blytheville has been a bit down the last couple of years. How is their talent looking this year? And I'll worry about Cape if they make it to the SEMO Conference Tourney finals and not a moment before.

So I know Park Hills Central won their season opening tournament, what is their threat level for Sikeston on Thursday?

-- Posted by sideline starter on Wed, Dec 1, 2010, at 12:04 PM
  • Park Hills did a nice job and won the AV Thankgiving Tourny but that was a very weak field of teams. They will offer no threat to Sikeston this week.

-- Posted by officer pigskin on Wed, Dec 1, 2010, at 12:58 PM
  • I know I am going against what I said earlier but the same Cape team beat a much better Notre Dame game last year.

I just think it will be hard for teams to match up with Cape's size this year, it's not just size but athletic and skilled size. They only have 1 starter under 6'3", granted he is around 5'9" or 5'10" but still everybody else they have on the court is just huge and each has their own uniqueness, good shooter, quick strong post moves, strength and power, and one pure post player who can shoot short baseline jumpers. If this Cape team is smart they will play the game above the rim. I don't see anybody that will shut down Otto or Tolbert by themselves but i doubt they would be dumb enough to put somebody one on one against either of them.

    -- Posted by BB-BORE on Wed, Dec 1, 2010, at 4:18 PM
  • True dat...Dexter has a legit Division 1 recruit in Flanigan....they will surprise many with him !!

-- Posted by RedShirt on Wed, Dec 1, 2010, at 5:30 PM
  • I'm pretty sure corey shut down tolbert last year in the DC game..

And a 6 3 250 pound TE will not be able to do a full court press the whole game, everyones talked about capes starting 5, nothing about their bench..

but this is a sikeston thread, and more then likely they'll go father in the playoffs then cape.. But hey look on the bright side, only a few more years till that casino..

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Wed, Dec 1, 2010, at 6:43 PM
  • He was "shut down" with 23 points in that game I believe. I'll take that kind of performance any day.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Wed, Dec 1, 2010, at 7:21 PM
  • -- Posted by CL on Wed, Dec 1, 2010, at 7:27 PM
  • 23 points> District Championship.... That doesnt make sense?

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Wed, Dec 1, 2010, at 8:31 PM
  • Didn't say anything about a district championship did I? Having trouble following your OWN posts? I responded to your incorrect comment about Tolbert being shutdown.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 7:39 AM
  • Good point Farmboy. He should have said that Sikeston shut down ND because that's what happened.

-- Posted by rocketsbro on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 8:37 AM
  • I think Cape will be pretty good if they are able to slow the game down and make it a half court game, but we all know when you play in Semo it is sometimes hard to do that with teams like Sikeston, Charleston and PB with the defense that these teams play and there bench is a question mark yet to be seen.

    Hey Farm,

Since you know so much about last years District Championship... Do you know how many points he had when they needed a better first half?

"Sikeston limited Tolbert to eight points on five shots in the first half. He also went 2 of 6 from the free-throw line." By definition "SHUTDOWN"

Second half he was able to produce more points with 15 and also shot better from the line 5 of 7. At this point most of the Sikeston focus on D has changed to keeping the 3's contained so that the lead would last. We all know what happens when you spread your team to guard against the 3!

    The inside game opens up!

As ROCKETSBRO stated "SIKESTON SHUT DOWN ND"

Now that is what you're really upset about isn't it Farmboy!!! It's o.k. cause when ND is down you can still jump back to the SCC train.

-- Posted by Haterade on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 9:03 AM
  • More then half of his points were pretty much given to him by letting him score rebounds and by not fouling him, and to keep them from stopping 3's.. And you pretty much said you were content with a 23 point game and a loss in the District championship, typical nd fan..

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 10:24 AM
  • *

No, you said he was shut down and farm said he wasn't. You made a statement and he made a rebuttal. 23 points is 23 points - it doesn't matter if it's 23 free throws or a bunch of uncontested baskets and a free throw. Any fan would trade a good performance by a star player for a DC.

    -- Posted by yah-yah on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 10:36 AM
  • Sorry gadget, yah yah and rocket are right on this one. ND may have been "shut down", but not Tolbert. Unless of course you consider 23 points a shut down. In that case, I hope Sikeston players get "shut down" every game.

-- Posted by trainhard on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 11:37 AM
  • *

I do agree that Tolbert struggled in the first half of that game last year and choked a bit from the free throw line. This definitely was part of the reason that Sikeston was able to gain a comfortable lead in the first half. However, I wouldn't say he got shut down. He was just contained long enough to build a deficit for the Blue Dogs.

theres bunch of players this yr, yea u might not have heard of them but they work harder than anyone and have put in the time and it will show. they can play defense, shoot the ball, and the run the floor. and at the end of the game when everyones tired theyll play even better because they want it more than anyone!

    -- Posted by NDbeastmode2011 on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 1:56 PM
  • *

Sounds like a bunch of semantics beastmode. Guys who "want it more" and "work harder than anyone" are all a matter of opinion. I can name you zero people not named Tolbert on ND's team this year primarily because every other major contributor last year was a senior. Unless someone transferred in, this may be a time that Dexter overtakes ND in District 1. Not saying it will, I just think this year is the best shot Dexter is going to have. So who other than Tolbert will be ND's standouts this year?

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 2:18 PM
  • I'm ready to see Dexter play. They have a Division I signee and appear poised and ready to contend for a district title. Plus it is at their home gymnasium once again. Dexter plays at Sikeston this Friday so we'll see if they have closed the gap. I'm not sure they have but it will be interesting to see.

-- Posted by semohoops on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 2:43 PM
  • Lol, I see Sikeston's fans haven't lost a step in the offseason. Off-topic comment, followed by insult, followed by getting their feelings hurt for being called out on their completely off-topic comment, followed by more insults.

HOOPS, call me when Sikeston brings home a championship in a major sport. Thanks. I'll take the state titles over a couple DC's, my feelings aren't hurt.

inspector made a statement that was quite obviously wrong, I responded, he posted a response completely unrelated to what we were talking about, then smart-guy HOOPS comes in pounding his chest. That's the Sikeston way.

If we want to talk about bandwagoning...I follow good teams. I was all over Charleston back in 06/07 when they were so good. Hell, I follow Sikeston quite a bit since they've been so competetive in the past few years. To be technical about it, I'm still an ND fan first and foremost (you can follow any of my posts and see that), and since I went to SCC for 10 years I'd say I can follow them and talk about them as much as I'd like.

Let me sum it up by saying this again....I'll take state titles over a few district championships and a so-called shutdown performance any time.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 3:38 PM
  • Farm,

According to ND's faithful....Tolbert was ranked in the top 150 juniors last year. I would say that "holding him" to 23 points is a "shut down." It's all how you look at it. 23 points is a very good game....33 or 43 is beast, IMO.

    -- Posted by Rocket689 on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 3:46 PM
  • You're right, 23 is a good game, not phenomenal, but good. I wasn't trying to make any other point other than that. If Tolbert was averaging 35 per game, then 23 would probably be shut down...otherwise, not so much.

Rocket, what is Sikeston's schedule like for the next couple weeks? I know they beat Blytheville, and they have a tourney coming at Christmas, but what do they have between now and then?

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 3:51 PM
  • We have Park Hills Central at home tonight, Dexter at home tomorrow night, the SEMO Conference tourney next week, at Ste. Gen on 12/13, Perryville at home on 12/14, ND at home on 12/17, then the St. Dominic Christmas Tourney on 12/27-12/29.

    -- Posted by Rocket689 on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 3:55 PM
  • I'll be interested in the Dexter game. Not expecting any surprises but I'd like to see where Dexter is.

    -- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Thu, Dec 2, 2010, at 4:00 PM
  • Yeah, Dexter is intriguing to me, too. They played Charleston VERY CLOSE and lost by 2 in OT. I saw Charleston down at the Riverbend and I was impressed. I'm not expecting any surprises either, but I do expect them to be much improved over last year.

Other than tolbert we wont have someone that stands out like him of course, but landewee is quick, can shoot, and will steal the ball. much like kellum last year who was 4th in the state in steals i believe. a jr named redin is maybe the top defender and will shut any gaurd down. lynch can shoot and is a tremendous passer. no one guy does everything on the team, its a team so they play together and do what it takes. They will win and surprise many people.

    -- Posted by NDbeastmode2011 on Fri, Dec 3, 2010, at 7:51 AM
  • you guys make it sound like 23 isnt to impressive. well i think, against a sikeston d that was pretty good last year, its outstanding. even though he is a top 150 junior some of you think he has to score 50 to do good.

    -- Posted by footballfanatic5 on Fri, Dec 3, 2010, at 10:31 AM
  • footballfanatic5,

I saw it with my OWN EYES....he can dunk the basketball. Let me clarify....he did not dunk during a game, but I saw him dunk right after a game at the Rib City Shootout this summer. It's still impressive to me that a guy his size and throw it down. I will quote a Sikeston official...."If I were a college football coach and I saw a kid his size dunk a basketball, I wouldn't even need to see him play a down of football to know I would want him on my team!!" That's almost verbatim..

Your church league squad could beat Sikeston's JV? I doubt that. And, stop being the topic police.

I think Dexter will be tough tonight, especially if they are able to dictate the tempo of the game at all. That being said, if they let Sikeston run the floor it may get out of hand.

I can't say if ND will be good, or not, but everyone is saying they have so much to replace, which is true. But look at their players and how many of them had "experience" the year before. Keke- little to none his junior year, Liam Meher- none, Alex Carrol- none, Matt Helle-little to none, and so forth. Someone will step up, but does that mean they will be great this year? Who knows... just something to think about. The only two players with playing time last year were Luciano and Tolbert, so really there is no difference from last year. It just depends if the senior class will step up, which seems to be happening here lately so don't count them out yet. One thing you can count on is they will get better and play hard, and set up another terrific District Championship with Sikeston and Notre Dame!

-- Posted by Kobeyashi on Mon, Dec 6, 2010, at 2:39 AM

Last year's DC game isn't what I would call terrific. And, I have a feeling ND will have trouble getting by Dexter in the district semis. It's premature to assume a Sikeston vs. ND district championship game.

  • Well, We will see what kind of game Dexter and ND will be on tuesday. I will be at Sikeston this whole week watching those games. Cape vs. Bluff is the one that I think will be closer than what evreryone thinks. Charleston will beat Jackson by 10, and Sikeston will turbo clock NMCC.

  • "Any fan would trade a good performance by a star player for a DC."

I hope this is a joke.. I just read this.. Who in their right mind would rather lose in the DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP but have a good game? Thats selfish.. I'd rather have 1 point and win?

That was probably their last horrah, which is why all ND fans are bringing up the past, because their realizing they arent up on the competition level..

Farmboy answer me this.. Will ND beat sikeston this year? And lets see whose obviousy wrong..

And i'll give the edge to dexter..

And i was impressed by flannigan but sikeston did an alright job, minus the three he made and all the free throws, he just dominanted the boards..

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Mon, Dec 6, 2010, at 3:30 PM
  • Lol, reading comprehension isn't your strong point is it? I can break it down and it make it simple for you if you'd like. Trading a good performance FOR a district championship means give up the strong performance FOR the district championship. Wow, you really showed that person you were trying to criticize. *smacks forehead*

I doubt ND will beat Sikeston this year, never thought they would. However I could be surprised. I didn't figure ND would win as many games as they did last year after losing some good players to graduation, but I was wrong. As it stands now, I see ND as being lucky to make it to the district championship game, let alone win it...but we'll see I guess.

Inspector, you say all ND fans are bringing up the past but i believe you started talkin about how corey "shut jake down" in the DC last year, in the SEMO Conference Tournament thread you brought up the Central Sikeston football game I assume. So dont be a hypocrite about the past. And dont even get me started on the recruiting comment you made in that thread too. It's called academic prestige also. Some parents care about their childs education than others and choose to pay for it.

I BEEN A SIKESTON NATIVE, I HAVE FOLLOWED THE GROUP OF BOYS FOR ABOUT THE PAST 6 YEARS COACHING IS COACHING AN THIS IS CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISM.THE ZONE WILL NOT WIN A TITLE CAN WE GET SOME MAN TO MAN. SECOND U NEED A GUY WITH LONG ARMS AT THE TOP OF THE PRESS HOWARD AN JAMISON ARE QUICK BUT GIPSON HAS SUCH LONG ARMS WOW.IT SEEMS U WOULD PLAY YOUR LINE UP DIFFERANT THE 11 GRADERS HAVE PLAYED TOGETHER AN COLLECTELIVY HAVENT LOSS A GAME AS 9TH GRADERS ARE JV THEY PLAY UNSELFISH BALL ON THE OTHER HAND HATCHETT TURNS THE BALL OVER 40% OF THE TIME HE WILL NOT PASS THE POST MAN NEVER SHOOTS THE BALL BACK OUT TO A OPEN WING WHEN HE IS SURROUNED BY 3 R 4 DEFENDERS SO IF SIKESTON CAN FIX THOSE CONCERNS THEY WILL BE A MUCH MORE POWERFUL CLUB. PLAYING JACKSON ON THURSDAY GOOD LUCK GOTTA COME OUT THE ZONE WITH THOSE GUYS SHOOTING THREES SIKSETON CAN NOT COME OUT SLUGGISH..

    -- Posted by stlfan38 on Tue, Dec 7, 2010, at 9:19 AM
  • stlfan38....I'm not even sure where to start. The content and the way you posted (all caps, poor punctuation, etc.) makes everything in there difficult to decipher.

First, the zone. If you've followed the last six years, then you'd know that they haven't been a zone team that entire time. Holifield used to play only man. He started slowly mixing it up the last several years, but it's only been the last couple that they've actually been a predominantly zone team. This team moves so well in the zone that teams won't be shooting them out of it. Teams can't move the ball around quickly enough because of the constant pressure.

Second, the press. You're criticizing Holifield for having Howard at the top of the press? Seriously? The quickest kid in the area? The one who will lead the area in steals because of his quickness? The one that can cause more havoc on defense because of said quickness? I like Gipson, but he shouldn't be starting. Not yet.

Third, Hatchett. I've only seen the last two games so far, but he's been the best player on the floor each of those games. He's been unselfish to a fault at times. He's stepped up his game on the defensive end. Right now, he's the only guy creating things off the dribble to free up others. Ask Corey Porter if Hatchett should sit more. He's been the recipient on many of Hatchett's great plays so far.

Fourth, the lineup. How would you suggest playing the lineup differently? Starting the second-best group of five just because they're juniors and have played well at the lower levels? There's a reason none of those guys are starters. The starters are better. Again, the second five is a great unit. This is as deep a team as I can remember Sikeston having. And those guys will see plenty of minutes. But the right guys are starting, there's no question about that.

Fifth, are you related to Gipson?

    -- Posted by BW23 on Tue, Dec 7, 2010, at 10:43 AM
  • BW23.....IMO, your analysis is spot on.

I don't know if you noticed, but it last night it looked like Coach Holifield started to mix his starters with the next 5 instead of the "line changes." I think that's what he has been working towards. I also agree about our depth....we are as deep as any team I can remember.

I think Eldridge has played very well so far. The onl way I would see him at the top of the zone was if Coach Holifield shifted into a 3-2 zone....which I doubt right now because the 2-3 is working so well. When Eldridge is in there, he needs to be near the hoop to grab some boards.

My only comment on the offensive end would be that Corey get more touches in the high post. He is so smart and fundamentally sound that he knows when to kick it back out for the trifecta or hit a cutter going to the hoop.

One stat that was a pleasant surprise to me. Against New Madrid, Sikeston was 18-21 from the free throw line. Let's keep that up and every game will be a bit easier.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Tue, Dec 7, 2010, at 11:15 AM
  • holifield plays to many people. if they played the first 5 and 2 or 3 others, they would be a lot better.

    -- Posted by PO526 on Tue, Dec 7, 2010, at 11:57 AM
  • Whatever Holifield is doing...it seems to be working. With a record of, I believe, 75-10 over the last 4 years, 118-24 the last 7 years??? That's pretty good in my book! Winning almost 90% of the games you play=successful

-- Posted by PBDC on Tue, Dec 7, 2010, at 12:02 PM
  • PO526,

The depth of this team and how the second five do not drop off is what causes so many problems for the competition. The press never lets up and never slows down. It wears on the other team and leads to so many easy baskets. PBDC, you hit the nail directly on the head!

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Tue, Dec 7, 2010, at 3:27 PM
  • Holifield's Record in the past 4 years:

    21-Losses

    80% - Winning Percentage

    Last 7 Years:

    123-Wins

    61-Losses

  • I was at the sikeston vs dexter game. Sikeston first 5 were awesome. As soon as he brought in the second five dexter started coming back. Now, those second 5 are good players if you incorporate them in with the first 5. But the 5 in 5 out dosnt really work and WILL come back to bite them. Leave hatchett and howard in until they want out

    -- Posted by PO526 on Tue, Dec 7, 2010, at 4:02 PM
  • PO526, the starting 5 had 3 football players, who still arent ready for a full basketball game, the second five will be dominant by the end of the year, they've done just fine in the first 3 varisty games of most of their careers..

And guish needs to be by the hoop, he has crazy hops, a little cal lane.. He could be a major factor..

And janiel IMO is the go to guy, when they need some points i'd give it to him, not taking away from the rest of the team..

And darryl is just fine where he is, he frustrates the other teams and causes lots of turnovers...

And finally NDBeastmode... You cannot use beastmode because you can't apply that to girls softball.. Secondly I brought up last years DC game.... Not the overall state championships or the amount of DC they have.. And as for education.. Sikeston has students that are probably 10x smarter then you.. Sorry we don't want to pay a couple grand to be classified as a "pansy" but hey if thats your goal in life.. Your doing an AMAZING job.. I know more then 10 people who couldnt get into the same college as some people from public schools because you guys don't have a class rank.. if you want to be stressed out for 4 straight years and end up probably the same as the students who try/care in public schools go ahead.. I put money on Mr. "eddie" cox that he'd out teach every teacher there.. IMO

You guys sure did go hard at the SEMO Conference tourney last year with that whopping three rows of people. Or are we going by revisionist history? One thing you can't revise is title and Sikeston has had the title of best large school fans in Southeast Missouri the last two years. I'd say the Bums would be a part of that. The only fan section I've seen that can rival them is Borgia.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Tue, Dec 7, 2010, at 11:23 PM
  • Stlfan38, as a wise inspector once said "You're an idiot!" Are you kidding me? You talk like you have all the answers but you are obviously ignorant of the game of basketball. There is one reason sikeston hasnt won state championships in the last few years and its sure as heck not coach Holifield! Its the teams theyve had to go through. 07 Notre Dame wins in dc on buzzer beater and gets beat state championship by 2. 08 Notre Dame wins dc and turbo clocks their way to a state title. 09 Borgia beat us in a close game and murders everyone on their road to the title and 10 Borgia gets beat in a close game in the state final against a team they shouldve beaten.

I know it is early and that polls mean nothing but massey ratings has updated for high school basketball for the first time this season. Sikeston is currently the #7 team in the state by their standards and the highest rated team in Class 4. Notre Dame is currently 5th in Class 4 and #21 overall. Scott Central is ranked 17th overall but I believe #1 in Class 1.

  • stlfan38...I'm sorry that you didn't catch my point. You say you can't win a state title playing zone yet the teams that Sikeston should have beaten, in your opinion, all played zone. Shoots your theory down pretty well. Sikeston tried a man against some of those teams and got burned pretty badly. I'm not arguing for or against either as I think some of it has to be dictated by the personnel you have in place. However, your "theory" is dead wrong.

Again, with the rest of what you say, it's really too hard to decipher with the lacking of proper punctuation, poor grammar and incorrect spelling.

It's been said over and over, but, I'll say it again. In order to beef up your schedule, you have to travel to St. Louis (closest option). I don't think it's in many schools' travel budgets to afford to travel that far on a regular basis.

You don't just call a tournament and tell them you're joining it. They invite you if and only if there's an opening AND they want you to play.

    -- Posted by yah-yah on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 9:36 AM
  • It's not as easy as you would believe to beef up your schedule. Sikeston has an open date right now and has contacted 4 different schools in St Louis. None of them will play us. I agree that a little tougher schedule would help but at least we are going north for our Xmas tourney. I really dont know much about the teams there but Warrenton is in it. If there is any justice we will get the chance for a little payback.

The St. Dominic tournament will be especially interesting if things match up right as one of the other schools in the tourney happens to be the Warrenton Warriors. I'd like to see Sikeston get some revenge in that game. In regards to beefing the schedule up, a lot of those games are early season shootouts and tournaments which are sometimes tough for Sikeston when the football team looks poised for a deep run. They tried to schedule some good teams for midseason like Henry County, TN for example but you can't gauge how good teams like that will be from one year to the next.

  • PB has to travel 2600 miles this season as we do every year and yes is does cost to do this but try having some fund raisers during the summer to help with the expense of doing it. You can't expect to have an open date and try to fill once the season starts and besides they could just go 10 miles down the road and play SCC to play some competion there are alot of tournments in December and January make some calls this spring and summer and try to get in one somewhere.

  • Can Sikeston's speed and press contain Jackson's height tomorrow?

    -- Posted by benchwarmer25 on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 10:10 AM
  • I think that's the $64,000 question, benchwarmer. Charleston had quite a bit of success late in the 4th quarter when they started pressing, so based on that, I think the Dogs will have success. Based solely on the Charleston game, it looks like Jackson's guards are shaky. I think Sikeston will be too deep, which will make the Sikeston press relentless....but that's my opinion. Obviously, Jackson should have the edge on the boards, but our guards do a very good job of rebounding. I like Sikeston by 10+.

    -- Posted by benchwarmer25 on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 10:25 AM
  • Bigelw you seem to have all the answers but really you don't know what you are talking about. First off, Sikeston isn't allowed to do fundraisers. Secondly, Sikeston is trying to fill the open date now because Kelly informed them that they were dropping them from the schedule in August (that's why the late notice and the scramble to find a game). Thirdly, of course Sikeston would love to play SCC. Everybody in the town would love to play that game. The people that don't want that game are the people in charge. And fourthly, budgets are incredibly tight right now so it's not feasible to just load up and drive 2,600 miles around the state to play games, especially when you can't do fundraisers.

-- Posted by semohoops on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 10:37 AM

The talent level of every team Sikeston plays is cyclical. Therefore, the entire schedule's strength is cyclical. You can't add a bigger school to your schedule and assume they will be good every year. It's just not feasible. They might be good for one year and graduate 8 seniors and be terrible the next. They would win the game big and everyone would be calling them out for a bad schedule. You can't predict whether a team is going to be really good or not.

  • If you can get in some good tournments that's where you play good teams year in and year out because if it a good tourney all they invite are quailty teams and yes playing better teams should make you better maybe not always but has to be better than playing some of the cupcake teams they play. And as far as regular season scheduling, it is usually a 2 year deal so if they are good 1 year and not the next then find another team after that.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 12:49 PM
  • Who are the cupcakes on Sikeston's schedule? Bernie? They took 2nd in the state last year and are one of the few area non-conference teams with the gonads to step up and play Sikeston. Who else? Park Hills? It's a Class 4 school and a possible setional opponent. Perryville, Ste. Gen., Fredericktown? All district opponents. No, you don't have to play district foes, but just about everybody does it. Sikeston doesn't play Hillsboro, although I'm quite sure they are Class 4 as well.

Sikeston was in the Massac Tournament for 12 years and got into the PB Showdown and the Dyersburg Tournament, both of which are stronger than Massac. Nice try though. Charleston and NMCC also dropped out of Massac, so what's your point on that?

Maplewood, Cardinal Ritter. Bring it on. Everybody would love to play them. Sikeston has made dozens of calls to St. Louis area teams. Everybody is full or don't want to play. So then you're going to say, well why wait now to make the calls. I will say, refer back to my earlier post that Kelly informed Sikeston they were dropping them in August. Sikeston has been on the phone ever since.

  • blujay pride 92,

Just to enlighten you....Perryville, Ste. Genevieve, and Fredericktown are in our district, Bernie was a Class 2 Final 4 team last year, and we don't play Hillsboro.

We have FANTASTIC facilities and we aren't ducking anyone. I know FOR A FACT, that we have contacted Maplewood, but can't get the schedule worked out. Regarding SCC, I would love for us to play them....so would the team and coaching staff (I don't presume to speak for them, however).

I'm actually not trying to say anything bad this time, surprise haha. Cause I would like to see sikeston play a maplewood or a Ritter, that would be great. We understand sikeston is late this year because Kelly informed late, but can they make some calls for games next year or the year after that!? And just schedule them now. Those games would be exciting and fun to watch.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 1:28 PM
  • I agree that would make a lot of sense BuckMajor. Sikeston has had to do a lot of schedule revamping the past few years after a lot of area teams have dropped them, including three from last year alone.

jus observation.. people are concerned about dotting Ts and crossing Is ooooops i mean dotting Is and crossing Ts on a compuyer screen.the game speaks for itself sikeston would not hav lost to notre dame in districts if the in bound man was guarded he throws ball in gets it back a there is the game. call kit luck are skill i say say skill on notre dame because they knew holifield like a book. all i can say is sikeston has talent lets jus win a championship

  • Best I can tell you are referring to the 2007 district title game. Time for you to learn a lesson. ND ran the same inbounds play they had run earlier in the year and Sikeston defended it to a T. Willen had no choice to to throw the ball back to the inbounder Dirnberger (not a good shooter and from 28 feet away). It was a lucky shot. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Hale even admitted that was not part of the inbounds play and it was luck. No team draws up an inbounds play for a kid to shoot a 28 footer, particularly a kid that isn't a scorer and doesn't shoot well. So how is that knowing Holifield like a book? Holifield actually knew the inbound play they would run and his players defended it, however, ND had two players deviate from the play and step up and improvised....Willen, who was double teamed and Dirnberger, who hit the shot. If you had to do it all over again, with 2 seconds on the clock, I would have defended it the exact same way and take my chances on some kid launching a 28-footer.

-- Posted by semohoops on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 1:48 PM
  • *

The inbounds man was not known to be a very solid shooter and he took the shot from a couple feet beyond NBA range. And, Sikeston made sure Willen didn't get a good look. If that's bad defense, I hope Sikeston continues to play like that and force teams to shoot from 22 feet out or beyond.

    -- Posted by yah-yah on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 1:53 PM
  • *

Good analysis, semohoops. However, I don't think the shot was even 25 feet out, much less 28.

    -- Posted by yah-yah on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 1:54 PM
  • Just b/c you don't win a state championship doesn't mean you don't have a quality team or a quality coach.

-- Posted by PBDC on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 1:57 PM
  • And this was no NBA range shot.....this was well beyond NBA range. They took it out right in front of Hale on the bench alongside the scorer's table. He threw it in and took one step in and lo and behold Willen was trapped and had to throw it back. It was great defense and the kid made a prayer. It happens. That's basketball. If you don't double-team Willen and put a man on the inbounds passer, then obviously Dirnberger never gets the ball back, but then you have Willen 1-on-1 and he could very easily have made a shot. Then people would ask, "why didn't you double team Willen?"

I can't believe we're rehashing that game. But some people are just clueless and need to be taught a lesson.

  • What about the sikeston dexter game?

I'm not so sure capes going to get past ND..

And sikeston tried to play oakville, i heard that they called and canceled... We wouldnt have to duct anyone, we could probably hang with every team in the state..

All I remember is that kid's quote in the paper after the game, "I'm not really a shooter". I'd say that double teaming Willen was the right move. But let's move on. I hate having to relive that game.

You might want to look at the other threads about Sikeston...it seems they have won 39 consecutive home games. That zone is working pretty good for Holifield and his boys.

  • Does anybody know why they can't have fundrasiers and just because they are in you district doesn't mean you have to play them we never play the 2 other teams in our district because they are not any good. And so what if Bernie was the runner up in class 2 they couldn't have beat any of the Semo teams and Kennett beat them by 20

-- Posted by BIGELW on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 2:23 PM
  • Who else should they play? They play charelston, ND, farmington, cape central, henry county, and hopefully SCC..

They have a chance to play St. dominic, holt, timberland, and FZN..

All have chances to win their districts..

    They tried to schedule oakville

every team plays a school they know they will beat, so they play bernie, if you were a bernie fan you'd want them to play tougher teams too.. Why did mizzou play semo?

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 2:28 PM
  • I don't know why they can't have fundraisers. I just know they aren't allowed to. No, you don't have to play district teams but almost every tries to schedule district opponents. That's very common practice. Those are the teams you will have to beat. Don't underestimate Bernie. They gave Sikeston one of their toughest games last season. Will they be an opponent Sikeston plays every year from here on out? Probably not, but it's nice to pick up top area teams, no matter what the size. I hear Sikeston is trying to get Caruthersville on the schedule to fill the void. The main thing at this point is to find the game to fill the schedule, no matter what size the school is.

You look at where the schedule is now compared to where it was and I would say it has been "beefed" up at least in terms of teams played year in and year out. I'd rather play Bernie who is actually a contender in their class over Oran who Sikeston used to play. They are slowly parting ways with Kelly who has been down over the last couple of years. They are always in a Christmas tournament other than that snafu last year. They could end up playing SCC one last time this year, but does anyone think they won't drop off in talent after this season, thus they don't need to be on the schedule year in and year out. There are teams you just don't drop though. I fully support playing all of our district opponents so that we have an idea of how they play whether they are good or not. Two years ago, people would have been asking why Sikeston plays Kennett. They play against some of the best teams in the area in their conference. I'd say the schedule is moving in the right direction. Before the rise of Mike Porter, Sikeston was an above-average Class 4 team. They created a winning tradition during his time playing and have been able to continue with that tradition. Thus, their schedule now looks weaker in comparison. You don't just drop all of your teams and re-do the schedule in one season. It is a gradual change.

  • Schedule, schedule, schedule. That's all anybody talks about. Nobody talks about the team. Just the schedule. It was the same way in football. Five years ago you never heard a word about the schedule, except maybe that it was too tough. Look at Cape's schedule. Look at Jackson's schedule. Look at Notre Dame's schedule. Are those schools schedule that much tougher, if any, than Sikeston's? Ten years ago Cape Central played a BRUTAL schedule. Slowly but surely it has been lightened up a little bit and you know what, I don't blame them. No reason to get beat down every single game and then you look up and you're 5-15 heading into district play. But hey, we are battle tested! No you're not. You are mentally and physically beat down. The flip side is you can play teams that you can beat or that you can compete with, build up confidence, build your program through winning, and go into district play 15-5 and feeling good about yourself and also get a favorable seed in the process.

-- Posted by semohoops on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 2:50 PM
  • I'm saying they should find 2 good tournments and try to get in them, then you can drop some regular season schedule cupcakes. But i do understand if they can't fundraise and as tight as the budgets are then it probaly won't happen. Not trying to **** anybody off i just think it would help them down the stretch.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 2:50 PM

SEMO Conference Tournament and St. Dominic/PB Showdown/Dyerburg/any other Christmas tourney Sikeston has done in the past. Boom, done. I agree that the fundraising issue is ridiculous but it has been in place for a long time and I think they have a legitimate reason for putting it in place though I have no idea what it is.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 2:58 PM
  • I guess to keep one sport from complaining about the amount they have to work with to another

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 2:59 PM
  • They have tried for years to get in the Cape Christmas Tournament. Currently they are in the SEMO Conference Tourney and the St. Dominic Tourney over Christmas.

Again, I'm trying to figure out who the cupcakes are. I realize some of the Class 4 schools they play aren't great, but at least its a game on the schedule instead of an open date. I'm telling you, they have tried to pick up many teams from St. Louis south and none will play.

Sikeston's non-conference, non-district games are Kennett, Henry County, Blytheville, St. Dominic Tourney, Bernie, Park Hills Central, Farmington. Is that so bad?

-- Posted by semohoops on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 3:00 PM
  • It's too bad they messed up the Showdown because it was close and they always have quality teams in it. I personally would like Sikeston to be in it.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 3:21 PM
  • The fundraising thing is ridiculous!! That's just a "Sikeston thing"...it needs to be changed and is in the process of being changed! There's no reason why the different activities can't raise money other than "we have always done it that way!" IMO, it's time to change that policy due to budget constraints. The town wants to help, but the school doesn't allow it. IMO, it's because central admin wants to control the dollars. I have a hunch that is going to change for the next school year. There are already some things in the works that I'm not at liberty to discuss....i.e. ways to raise money for activities.

  • what time does the SEMO Conf tourny start tomorrow? what time does sikeston play? I think Sikeston will beat Jackson by 15. Its hard to beat sikeston in the fieldhouse. After what I read about the PB/Cape game, I think ND will beat Cape by under 10 pts. PB will beat dexter by 4. I love this tourny. It is just fun to watch, the players are great, and the coaches are funny. The best 5 players in the tourny are Tolbert(He is so explosive), then Flannigan(he can do it all), Hachett and Howard, and then I would say, Clark of Jackson.

Who would you put as the top 5?

    -- Posted by PO526 on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 3:23 PM
  • Tolbert proved last night he is definately a step above everyone else. Yes I realize Flannigan outscored him but that's because that was Dexter's only option. You have to admit ND's supporting cast is better than anyone thought. I can't blame anyone for doubting them because I realize they didnt really have much experience but they took care of that discussion last night. They fell off a little in the second half but they'll take care of that in the future I'm sure. After Tolbert I would have to probably put Flannigan then probably Hatchett and Howard bc of length and speed and then I really can't say. I definitely would not say Clark. I realize he has a pretty good game the other night but that was a once in a season kind of game. But he could also prove me wrong. In sure someone else will stand out in the upcoming games

  • Lane is a very good player. I sort of feel bad in a way bc his coach is an idiot and playing him at guard. I'm gonna give Church the benefit of the doubt and say Lane is going to go back to the post when Curtis is able to play. He isn't the best scorer but he's probably one of the best rebounders around. But a guard or shooter he definitely is not

I have no problem with Charleston or most people from Charleston. Unless they are playing Sikeston, I traditionally root for Charleston as I have many friends from high school who went to school there. I wasn't in the band and I wasn't a huge athlete and couldn't care less who was or wasn't on here. Your opinion gains no more merit with me if you beat Sikeston ten times or never beat them, whether you were an all-state player or just a big fan like me. However, when people like you get on a diatribe about how great your team was this year or that year or how it was only a lucky break that got this team to be where they are, I tend to reply sarcastically because you've just diminisheed the hard work and talent of everyone involved so I figure your comment should be treated the same way.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 8:25 PM
  • That made no sense inspector. They made a lot of shots but were open a lot of the time? Umm. Sorry to burst your bubble but getting open and knocking the shot down is a huge part of the game of basketball. And they even made shots with people in their face (or dunked on people) hence Buessinks buzzer beaters at the end of the second and third quarters

    -- Posted by <123> on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 8:45 PM

    -- Posted by 143SticksNRocks on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 8:51 PM
  • Yes, Charleston was great back in the day. (By the way, Sikeston also beat Charleston on their homecoming in 89 so technically if you were a part of that team as a freshman, then you lost twice to Sikeston). Anyway, Charleston was the team back then. No question. But here lately Sikeston has been the power, beating Charleston 5 or 6 times in a row. That's high school sports. It's cyclical. At some point in the future Charleston will be a power again and Sikeston will be down. And then in the future after that, Charleston will be down and Sikeston will be great again. That's just high school sports.

09-10 - Sikeston won (one game)

  • Cape has talent. It just happens that all of the talent is 6'5". They will be better when that one boy get to play...i think after christmas. However, until then they need to figure out who else can play guard. Out of all the teams left in this tourny i think Jackson has the most balance, Sikeston has the most depth and talent, Notre Dame has the best player and shooters, and Cape has the best stall game

    -- Posted by PO526 on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 9:17 PM
  • I don't need to try again. I made my point, and you helped. Everyone on this website was saying ND didn't have anybody but Tolbert. And I understand that. There really wasn't anyone with experience. But they proved last night that there is a supporting cast. A good supporting cast that gets open and knocks down shots. That's what Notre Dame does. Everyone's going to say I'm an idiot but I would not be surprised one bit if this years team breaks school 3-point records. This is a different team than last years. Last year ND was tall and physical. This year they're small but can outshoot anyone around

    -- Posted by <123> on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 9:31 PM

-- Posted by sportsfanatic on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 6:41 PM

Howd that turnout for us? id say pretty darn good. a 1000 yard rusher that shared touches with 2 other running backs and 2 fullbacks..ill take that anyday of the week. And how do you compare him to kelion in any way, shape or form? i guess cuz theyre both studs. thats the only thing i can think of. James lane averaged 16 POINTS AND 12 REBOUNDS as a junior. I repeat..16 points and 12 rebounds. not a soul on sikeston put those numbers up last year. doubt anyone will this year. and now hes a senior and hes bigger and stronger which only makes him more dominant. and no he isn't a gaurd, if he gets the rebound he dribbles up the court but that's because hes not just a one dynamic player. gimme a call when corey porter dribbles the ball up the court.

And to the 36 point comment..capes obviously not that bad so lets throw that comment aside to start. not only did they have an off game but its hard to score 60 points when the other team preaches 2 minutes possesions. capes an up tempo team and youll see that when they face nd tomorrow. theyre gonna enjoy breaking that press.

-- Posted by JungleStud on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 9:54 PM
  • The 36 point debate was like cape fans harping on the Obion game.. And we wont have a 16 and 18 probably because we'll have like 8 10-10 guys..

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 9:56 PM
  • They have no one to break that press with though. I'm not bashing cape here. I'm saying lane isn't a guard. He's a good player, but not when he has to play shooting guard. I wouldn't say anything if you had Curtis right now but you don't and the 1 guard you do have isn't a great ball handler and you aren't gonna pass through ND's press and I don't think Lane's gonna be dribbling through it

    -- Posted by <123> on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 10:02 PM

The problem with saying that it is tough to score when the other team preaches two minute possessions is that a good team would force their opponent to play at their tempo. Sikeston scored at least in the sixties each time they played Bluff last year.

And yes I realize he's not going to play a center but let's say he does get a scholarship to play somewhere. That somewhere isn't going to be a big D1 school so with his athleticism his best bet would be playing a slightly undersized power forward. But he really doesn't have a very good post game. And don't go to personal attacks now. I think James Lane is a very good player. He's just playing the wrong position

    -- Posted by <123> on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 6:50 AM
  • My bad. Lane isN'T going to get in college playing a guard

    -- Posted by <123> on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 6:51 AM
  • No way Cape breaks any press easy they have 1 ball handler and get real Cape an uptempo team (did u really just say that) if they want to be an uptempo team than they need to learn to guard man to man that zone will not work, yea i know you beat PB with it. 17 offensive rebounds and we shot 17% and not because of your 1-3-1 pressure we just couldn't make open shots

-- Posted by BIGELW on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 7:35 AM
  • I seriously doubt if Church would worry more about Lanes future in college more than whats best for the teams success....

-- Posted by barkleyfan on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 8:30 AM
  • syracuse is an up tempo division one college basketball team that also runs a zone, its very capable to run an up tempo offense in a zone...going for the steals and getting on fast breaks. and the whole lane thing, what i said is that church is trying to make him into a guard..he may not be the best as of now but he will be a ton better by the end of the season. and whats best for the team?? we have tj and boom to also hold down the center position, plenty of options

    -- Posted by ctjungle2010 on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 9:25 AM
  • I rest my case.

-- Posted by barkleyfan on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 9:29 AM
  • but here's the thing they are not Syracuse, not even close. i don't know what they have done against other teams but PB only had 7 turnovers. I know it was an ugly game but that's the best way for us to beat a team that just drops back in a zone like they play. Every time we play Cape the game is like that slow and boring.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 9:40 AM
  • didnt say they were syracuse i was just giving an example of a zone defense being an up tempo offense

  • Sikeston game depends on the officiating. If they let them play Sikeston by 15+, but if they call it tight Sikeston may be in trouble. Jackson has size and can shoot outside the paint. But I think Sikeston will wear them down with pressure.

  • Mandm96

if sikeston did beat maplewood it was most likely when Allen was in 9th or 10th grade I got to see them play alot and Allens junior and senior year they lost maybe one or two games one of those being against the future state champs chaminade and Bradley beal and the only reason they lost was Allen sat the bench for most the 3rd for back talking the coach they also ended Webster groves amazing home winning streak

-- Posted by Running man on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 7:26 PM
  • Running Man

It was actually Allen's junior year....the first year they won state. Sikeston beat them 83-58.

  • Sikeston beat Maplewood 83-58 when Bryant Allen was a junior over at the PB Showdown. Here is the writeup from that game. Allen finished with 17 points. He had 10 in the first quarter but only 7 the rest of the way after Sikeston went to a box-and-one. Maplewood ended up winning state easily in their class.

The guys flubs everything that crosses his desk, you can set your watch to it. I mean really, what does he do all day, sell suits at JC Penney?! Chad, you are a local sports anchor, take some initiative and learn your craft. Sorry for taking this thread off topic, but...

I am much more confident in Sikeston's ability to win in the SEMO conference after watching ND and CT tonight. That game was a snoozefest until, well, it wasn't. Central fans have been talking their team up pretty big, sounds awful familiar! There's no way CT will be able to handle Sikeston's pressure D for four quarters.

    Sikeston-64

    Central-50

  • DukePhan u picked the correct winner for tonights game...BUT Sikeston giving up 50 or Sikeston only winning by 14? Now that's crazy. I think Jackson is tons better than Cape right now. And Jackson only scored I believe 34. Right now Cape does not have an outside scorer except for that number 20 kid. They do not have a PG...right now. This game could get ugly quick. Sikeston more than likely will win by 30+. And that's after calling off the "dawgs". I think the Bums should cheer for Cape tonight when they score their first basket! Because that's the first score they have scored on Sikeston besides maybe soccer. Bums? Did you get that??? Cheer very loud. Haha. I was at the game last night CT fans and I did cheer for you guys. Just not tonight

  • This is so pathetic. The jungle is crying because Sikeston fans stuck around? Seriously? Sikeston had just played, and the kids wanted to see who they'd play tonight.

If anything, the incredibly stupid and immature comments you and your little buddies post on here are probably the reason you were embarrassed by the bums last night. Quit crying. You're in high school now. Time to grow up.

Let me preface my comment by saying that I was at both games for their entirety last night. I don't see how the Cape fans can be bragging at all about how they are going to win tonight. I'm not saying that Sikeston has this in the bag, but the Jungle may want to remember that you wouldn't be here right now unless Notre Dame hadn't made the mistake of fouling on an off-the-mark desperation shot or if Jake Tolbert had made his second free throw with five seconds left. You guys did not win that game last night, Notre Dame lost it. For those saying that Tom Williams is more lenient to the Bums, I believe he just may have a little less patience for the Jungle after a certain "Siketon girls have STDs" comment in this tournament a couple of years ago. I wouldn't have patience after that either. Fans can watch any game they want and root for whoever they want. From my vantage point, the Bums were primarily rooting for Cape anyway in their comments. ctjungle2010, I'd say any true OG is probably not in a group called the Jungle on a website whining about how someone else gets to chant more than they do. I would hope we don't have any OGs on here anyway, they are not exactly the friendliest people.

No problem mandm96. I was Bum and know what Williams and Keefer and King will tolerate and what they won't. And I know they all remember that comment I brought up above. When you move away from the opposing cheering section with the personal comments is when I have a problem. You don't attack players personally, refs, or anybody else in the stands. As a member of your cheering section, I fell there is a bit more leniency because it is more in good fun there. That's just my opinion.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Dec 10, 2010, at 11:22 AM
  • It goes both ways also. I know the Bums have had their fair share of chants that shouldn't have happened. IE: Kony Ealy. But, I think all groups need to remember not to make it personal. It takes away from the game and just makes them look like a bunch of idiot's.

I feel like the Kony Ealy incident goes without saying. And the Bums were reprimanded by the school accordingly and haven't gotten out of line in that way since. You live and you learn.

This is called a Cape fan who is saying you are going to win tonight. I'm not saying they all are. I'm just saying you guys need to appreciate being here. After last night's game, I was expecting Cape fans to talk about that great finish and instead there are more complaints about the Bums? Somebody's priorities are a bit out of touch. And even if that incident was two year's ago, it still lingers in a lot of people's minds. You guys may be different people but it is the same group thus the same connotation.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Dec 10, 2010, at 11:58 AM
  • I'm not getting worked up. If I was, I'd call your school and have them check into you violating school rules by posting on here during school hours on school computers. The only thing that bothers me about that back and forth garbage about the jungle and bums and other student sections crap is that nobody here cares at all. Nobody. This thread was about Sikeston basketball, and there's been any real discussion about that.

You and your "boys" came on here before the first Sikeston/Cape football game talking smack. Then you ran and hid. Then you did it right before the second game. Then you ran and hid.

I don't expect to see you around tonight or this weekend on here, and for that I'm thankful.

    -- Posted by BW23 on Fri, Dec 10, 2010, at 12:12 PM
  • Idiotic is thinking that Sikeston can't beat Cape tonight by 40. The only reason why I think it might not be quite 40 is because the running clock in the second half. If Sikeston can beat Jackson as bad as they did last night, who I think is hands down better than cape, please do not think it won't happen to you.

Far as you guys not in "full force.". Are you talking about your recruit that is not eligible till second semester??? Sikeston runs 10 guys in and out. Our second 5 can play the entire game and still beat you guys. Your "recruit" is one player and when he gets tired of having to break the press or having to play the entire game because you have no other player do not come crying back on this site.

Oh and Cape fans!!! I haven't heard a lot of talk about Corey Porter. What? You guys see he can get up and down the court. Or you see other teams not being able to stop him?

Appreciate being here? Ha pretty sure were the 2 seed we were expected to be here. And if there not over that chants from 2 years ago they seriously need to move on with their lives. Ct has more than just this so called recruit out 3 guys will be back after Xmas break

-- Posted by JungleStud on Fri, Dec 10, 2010, at 1:28 PM
  • This is buried a little further back and I just now saw it. Bluejay Pride 92 says Sikeston wouldn't have been good had Melvin Porter stayed at SCC. Well woulda, could, shoulda. IF, IF, IF. What if Sikeston didn't lose all the kids that live within the district? What if Ashton Farmer went to Sikeston? Or Corey Gipson? Or Sean Gibson? Or Norman, Nathan, Shaun, and Sherome Cole? Or Deaires Tate, who moved to St. Louis and started for McCluer? Or Bobby Hatchett? Or Randy Timmons? I can go on and on with kids that lived here but went to another school or moved off. It happens. But for once a family moves to Sikeston and you never hear the end of it. It's not like they went to Scott Central their whole lives. They went there for 3 years before moving to Sikeston.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Dec 10, 2010, at 1:52 PM
  • If you couldnt out chant ND your deffinitely not going to beat the bums.. You were silent the whole first half.. You shouldnt be in the Championship game and anyone with a brain would know that, it was luck.. And i hate ND

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Fri, Dec 10, 2010, at 2:10 PM
  • I agree with you semohoops. It gonna continue to happen with family's "school hoppin". It's happened many of times where kids go to certain schools with a lot of expectations and come January their riding the pine or they quit the team. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. As a matter of fact, the Cole's situation was somewhat similar. They attended Sikeston for some time with plenty of upside, but decided to go Richland where they had a lot better success.

Being an SCC supporter, definitely not gonna complain about that because Bobby Hatchett was a Sikeston kid first. We know how that played out.

I think Sikeston will pull this one off as well. Cape seems to have some troubles with the fundamentals and tend to let their opponents control the tempo. Though they claim to play at a fast pace, numbers don't lie. They scored 36 and 48 points in their first two games. With a team as talented as Sikeston, skating by isn't going to be enough. The Bulldogs disrupt Cape and win going away.
