  • No love for Risco? Valle getting overlooked.

  • I'm also a little surprised Cooter isn't ranked in Class 1 or at least getting some votes.

Just glad to finally see some new posts about baseball. Was beginning to wonder about the forum. Try-outs start this week. Let's hear it for Baseball!!

-- Posted by Troublewiththecurve on Sun, Mar 2, 2014, at 8:17 PM
  • I agree capeballer. It's definately time to start talking baseball. Nice to see my Oran Eagles ranked #1 but I believe that's being a bit too generous. Hopefully I'm wrong ? Either way bring on warmer weather and America's favorite pastime.

    -- Posted by jrob5352 on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 10:25 AM
  • that's not being generous. Oran's about to win 4 of the next7 state titles in baseball.. my prediction.

If ND wins state in baseball, they'll have one a title in class 2, class 3, and class 4. System has come a long way...I feel real sorry for the small schools that had to compete in the ND baseball district pre-2002 (I think that's the year it changed).

That's a pretty bold prediction haha

-- Posted by formerposterchild on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 12:49 PM
  • Hard to imagine making a prediction as bold as this comment from above:

"Oran's about to win 4 of the next7 state titles in baseball.. my prediction."

    -- Posted by semo7178 on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 1:35 PM
  • Oran better have a stable full of stud pitchers coming up to fulfill that prediction. Great baseball program, but that prediction is a little extreme IMHO. Wonder if Uncle Charlie would agree with FallSoFar's prophecy?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 1:43 PM
  • Wow. Oran must have some serious talent coming up. Especially when you consider how loaded they've been in the past and having won the one state title. Listen to me, just the one state title. That's more than 99% of the population.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 2:23 PM
  • Wow is right. Preacher I don't think Uncle Charlie or any of the rest of us from Oran would agree with that. We do have some really good talent coming up in a year or two but 4 of the next 7? Not hardly.

    -- Posted by jrob5352 on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 3:10 PM
  • I hear you jwhitlock. Just the ONE state title. But hey, one state championship and 11 or so final fours. I'll take it.

  • Look out for our Bernie Mules.

  • You all do realize most of the top class 1 programs are now class 2 teams and will stay that way?

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 4:49 PM
  • lets say these Scott county all star traveling teams carry 15kids. 5 go to ND, 5 go to Oran, 2 to Scott city, 2 to Chaffee, 1 to Kelly. Basically Oran's gettin the same players Notre Dame usually does.

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 4:50 PM
  • Class 2 is loaded in this area.

Good to see the forum up and running! How about some comments on some other local teams? Jackson have anything? How about Cape or Sikeston? Mule fans?

-- Posted by Troublewiththecurve on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 5:13 PM
  • Thanks Mr. Doby.

Semo I was talking about that comment, but even if everyone's moving up do you realize if 5 of those kids from that all star team go to a different class 1 school then "their getting the same players as ND"

-- Posted by formerposterchild on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 5:31 PM
  • Notre Dame will be good, Sikeston should be strong with pitching, Jackson graduated a lot but has a huge school so should be competitive again, Cape should be really good with their returning pitching.

I agree that Notre Dame will be good. Strong jr class. Solid pitching and deep. Same with Sikeston. Not sure about Jackson either Falls. Being from Cape I am curious about the new coach but expect they will be as scrappy as ever, some good pitching coming back with Jr. Hagerty and Sr. Chism other than that ????

-- Posted by Troublewiththecurve on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 8:43 PM
  • yes but they don't. It's a Scott county all star team. What other class one schools reside in Scott county?

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 9:44 PM
  • 2 pitchers can win you about 15 games alone.

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Mon, Mar 3, 2014, at 9:44 PM
  • My thoughts for everyone: If anyone knows baseball across Scott County, or knows/understands how high school baseball works, it's format, and evaluating talent, it would be Fall. I like to think I know a little bit too. I have no other comments regarding my opinion.

Just to answer your question PMF, Oran should have 2-3 left hand handed pitchers that will shape up to be good pitchers for any class in 3-4 years.

  • So ready to get going. Should be a great year in our area. Class 1 will probably be the usual suspects. Class 2 is loaded. Class 3 may be down a little as a whole. The big schools should be real competitive all year long.

-- Posted by Kidrayray on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 10:23 AM
  • thank you UNC

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 10:24 AM
  • and when I say 4 of 7. I am counting last year and I am predicting one for this year also. so therefore it'd only be 2 of the next 5.

  • class 2 legit teams at the final 4.. Valle, Chaffee, Bernie, Greenville, Holcomb, Portageville, South Pem, Senath, Campbell, East Carter, Neelyville. May be missing other locals but all have either a top notch starter or starting depth.

The only other Class 1 baseball school in Scott County is Scott County Central.

    RE: Oran

The Eagles have several holes to fill this year due to graduation, an injury and a move out. That being said they should compete well in Class 1. Their schedule is very ambitious however, so the record may not look great come the middle of May. But they will regularly face better competition than what they should see in the post season.

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 10:52 AM
  • Not many teams can match what they'll run out on the mound.

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 11:00 AM
  • Bernie has 3 pretty good pitchers..

-- Posted by BBfanatic on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 11:31 AM
  • Weather could be a real factor this spring. Calling for a cold and wet spring.

-- Posted by crackerjack on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 11:46 AM
  • Class 2 in the Bootheel area will be very tough. One district alone will have Portageville., Holcomb, South Pemiscot and Senath... One of those, Holcomb has both pitchers back who pitched every inning that was meaningful from districts all the way thru the Final Four. They lost a great hitter in Glover but have a really good Senior class. Should be a fun spring if it ever gets here.

-- Posted by MoArk on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 4:35 PM
  • Isn't Campbell in there too MoArk? I think they have a good pitcher or 2

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 5:22 PM
  • Who's better Alan Trammel or Devon Trammel?

Don't forget about Oak Ridge in class 1. They return the bulk of their lineup from a team that took Oran to extra innings in the district championship game last year.

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 8:38 PM
  • Kelby Brown and Jake LeGrand are solid

-- Posted by Coach Horrell on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 8:44 PM

Ryan Below went 3-4 with a double, triple and a clutch game tying 2 out home run in the 7th.

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 8:54 PM
  • Larry--I agree. I think Oak Ridge will win that district.

-- Posted by crackerjack on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 8:56 PM
  • Sikeston will be strong. Especially on the mound. Two very good lefties in Doug Still and Jacob Clark. Also Gavin O'Brien will be very good. O'Brien also hit about .480 last year. Gonna be a great season. Let's get some warm weather and get it started!

-- Posted by Brownbomber on Tue, Mar 4, 2014, at 10:47 PM
  • Agreed brown. You guys should be strong but you have to go through ND and that will be tough this year

Looking forward to a little ND action myself. Cape gave them all they wanted last year. GO TIGERS!!

-- Posted by Troublewiththecurve on Wed, Mar 5, 2014, at 8:50 PM
  • Going through ND is always tough. We will find out early in the season how we stack up as we play them in a Saturday double header to start the season. I believe that ND will struggle against lefties ( like most teams ) so I'm sure Doug Still will get the nod against them. Should be a great match up. Can't wait to get it started.
