Starting a new one since the old one hit 400.

So I will admit that I am fascinated with Kim Anderson right now. I wonder how long he will keep suspending players when its costing the team victories. While college coaches are also teachers, they also need to be winning games.

I'm hearing that Wright and Teki did not travel to South Carolina for the game tonight.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Feb 10, 2015, at 4:56 PM

I say he starts recruiting players that actually have a conscience and at least know how to represent the university in a mature and intelligent way. That may not be possible in this day and age of win at all costs, integrity be damned. But i will always admire him if he gives it a shot. Im tired of idiots "representing" my alma mater.

Looks like Wes Clark is out for the rest of the year.

Mizzou will not another game for the rest of the year.

I've been hearing all week that one of the top ranked players in 2016, Thon Maker, will be deciding if he is going to reclassify to 2015 today. I believe he finished all his course work two weeks ago, had a tournament last week, and they said his grades would be early this week, and Wednesday they would probably announce. I think he has like 3.9 GPA, so I see him passing everything and reclassifying. His guardian said they would then sit down with the NCAA Clearinghouse and make sure he can play college ball. If he doesn't clear, they said he would do like Mudiay and play internationally. I see him clearing though and going to a college next year.

Welp it looks like they are going to make the announcement Friday. I would say since they've pushed it back, that means he's reclassifying, probably waiting for an ESPN film crew or to set up a ceremony or something like that. He has visited Mizzou too I believe, so they are on his radar.

Mizzou needs so much help its not even worthy saying how much.

Well he would definitely be a game changer, I've seen him play in person. Although, I have heard that Kansas and UK might be his top two. I know if he qualifies he said he is going to try and visit both soon.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Feb 11, 2015, at 12:40 PM
  • Things are so bad at Mizzou this season. It's unlikely a marquee recruit would decide to come to Mizzou.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Wed, Feb 11, 2015, at 12:42 PM
  • Im already wondering how many are gonna transfer out

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Wed, Feb 11, 2015, at 12:52 PM

ummm that would be tough. You have to have guys stick with the program. Hopefully KA can win them all over and show that he is their for them and to better them and cares about them. Even through suspensions he can show that he is looking out for their best interests.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Feb 11, 2015, at 1:15 PM
  • Unless they're a bad apple it would be stupid to transfer. As bad as it is this year it will be much better next year and the year after that could be really solid if things develop correctly.

No. 40 player I'm 2015, Ted Kapita just commited to Arkansas. Mizzou was in his top 3 (Memphis being the 3rd), and he goes to Huntimgton Prep where Fulford coached. I really thought Mizzou might get him. Now Mizzou top remaining front court players are Levi Cook and Thomas Bryant (more likely they get Cook). I've seen all 3 play. And could really help Mizzou. Cook needs to get in better shape though.

Karl Towns was named the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week. He also won that other freshman of the week award that UK players have won 10 times this season.

    Haha too funny!

Well the Thon Maker saga continues this morning. He tweets out this morning "I'm on track to graduate this year but a lot of hard work ahead this summer! No shortcuts on this road to success. #built4this". Many recruiters and reporters are interpreting "on tract to graduate this year" as meaning that he's moving into the 2015 class. Which is pretty much expected. I think 2016 draft was the plan for a while now.

  • If we dont beat Vandy on Saturday we will not win another game. My hatred for Frank Haith is skyrocketing.

-- Posted by exzalmanian on Thu, Feb 19, 2015, at 11:44 PM
  • I like how Haith said he would've won 20 games if he'd stayed at Mizzou. What a clown.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Fri, Feb 20, 2015, at 1:31 AM
  • Buck ur boyz got hosed by the refs lasnite. The ball was released about half second after the buzzer and all three refs blew it. Unbelievable.

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Fri, Feb 20, 2015, at 10:24 AM
  • *

Yep. But it happens. The shot was clearly after the buzzer, and the clock hits 0.0 even before the buzzer goes off. He shoots it about a second after the 0.0. But we shouldn't have dug ourselves in that big of a hole in the beginning. We were rusty with only 1 day of practice since the Jackson game.

It seems to me like Mizzou would really benefit from an outside sharp shooter. Their frontcourt guys aren't good enough for all these teams to pack it in the paint. A good 3 point shooter would really open things up in my opinion. Has Mizzou got a good shooter that has committed for next year!? Or are they looking at anybody. (Blakeney would have been nice, the LSU pick surprised me a bit).

  • They got the kid from Pacific who supposed to be a three specialist, Van Leer or somethin like that.

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Fri, Feb 20, 2015, at 11:07 AM
  • His name is Cullen Van Leer. He's the coaches son at Pacific. He is quite a shooter. However Jackson held him to either 8 or 11 thru the third quarter so he has some work to do to make the step up to big time D1

Great kid and family though so wishing him the best.

Whats your thoughts on the freshmen ineligible rule being considered?

    I personally don't like it.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Fri, Feb 20, 2015, at 4:11 PM
  • *

Hate it! Don't think it would have the effect they are looking for. Hopefully they are just kicking that idea around. If we are going to make a change, I would much more support the having to be removed two years from high school rule. I think this ineligible rule would just move kids overseas, heck it's practically happening anyway.

Good to hear about the Van Leer kid. Saw on twiter where Levi Cook said he would visit in March. That's who I think you guys will get as your front court for 2015.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Fri, Feb 20, 2015, at 6:13 PM
  • Hey Buck, a philosophical hypothetical question here. Ur a top 100 recruit and uve narrowed ur choices down to a couple schools. One is loaded with NBA players and is guaranteed to make The Dance til 2050, but the coach can only offer maybe 10-15mins playing time off the bench rite away. The other is loaded with young rather short athletes who cant shoot or play defense and may not make The Dance til 2020. The first year coach is possibly good but who knows? He can guarantee you to hear ur name announced as a starter from the git-go and probly be out on the court at least 30mins a game. Do u go for the gusto and swallow ur pride with the hope of acquiring 2-3 Rings before signing ur multimillion dollar Nba contract or do u settle for playing most of every game with no hope of a Ring or even maybe getting a Dance invite.

Not a very tuff choice in my book, unfortunately for me

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Sat, Feb 21, 2015, at 3:39 PM
  • Ciri. Not sure what you're thinking but I'm going for the playing time and the chance to make a difference.

Of course that contract would be enticing!

-- Posted by IndianPride on Sat, Feb 21, 2015, at 8:01 PM
  • *

That's some great points Ciri. I will add that you also get NBA scouts watch you at every practice at one of them. Also at the UK game tonight were representatives from the Lakers, Heat, Knicks, and Magic. It doesn't really matter how much playing time they get when you have situations like that. That's why they have 6 projected 1st round picks and no one is averaging over 12 points a game.

  • Anderson is a good man, he can coach, and he has been dealt a very tough hand. He should have been the guy to replace Norm Stewart when he was forced out, or at the very least replaced Snyder. It has been a steady downhill slide since the last year mike Anderson was at Mizzou. He did not recruit a single player and even stopped coaching the second half of his last year. Frank Haith relied on transfers to the extent that when that source of players dried up he had not recruited any good high school players. He bailed when he saw Brown and Clarkson were declaring for the NBA and Kim inherited a bunch of good athletes, but not good basketball players in this years group.

  • Haith seems to do well with veteran rosters recruited by other coaches. He should have never been hired to replace Mike Anderson. His conference record in the ACC was the first tipoff.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Feb 24, 2015, at 10:50 PM
  • Cullen VanLeer is GOOD. I can promise you that. His issue in high school is that his team is garbage. All you have to do to beat Pacific is guard him so teams can really emphasize that. When he gets to college he will be left alone. Could end up being a phenomenal shooter in college. Just worried about his size and defensive skills. Not too sure if he can be a very good on ball defender in the SEC.

  • The hoops gods looked down favorably upon our beloved kittens lasnite, we need to give thanks and praise that the Gators were absent their two best players. Namon Wright wouldve made treys blindfolded lasnite and the Gators were 9-23 from the charity stripe. All of this combined to end the miserable historic losing streak. This season needs to end tomorrow but at least we wont end it on an 18 game losing streak!!

Kentucky's Trey Lyles won that award that the conference he plays in gives out to the best freshman that week. That is his second and UK's 11th this season.

Also Marcus Lovett (who NMCC played against in the overall championship of the Carbondale Holiday Tournament) said today that he will make his college commitment next week. Teams such as Arizona, Kansas, Illinois and Texas are after him.

Mizzou recently watched one of the top JUCO players and No.4 JUCO SG Mychal Mulder. He is an excellent 3 point shooter, which I really think Mizzou needs for next year. He has a couple of other high profile programs after him like Wichita St, but it looks like it might be a race between Mizzou and Louisville. Lville is also going to back court help, and Pitino has watched him a couple times. Will be interesting to see if Mizzou can get him.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Mar 4, 2015, at 10:09 AM

Hers something interesting to discuss. They released the roster for the Jordan Brand Classic today. There were a few surprises of high profile guys who didn't get invited. The 6 players who were invited to the McDonalds American Game but not the JBC all play for non Nike AAU teams. Thoughts on that!?

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Thu, Mar 5, 2015, at 2:21 PM
  • Who's the decision makers for these type of showcases? I wonder what the protocol is, like do they actually hafta tryout or audition to try to get picked?

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Thu, Mar 5, 2015, at 3:20 PM
  • *

Nope no auditions or tryouts, the decision makers just pick who they think are the top players in the nation.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Thu, Mar 5, 2015, at 3:25 PM
  • That is interesting. Who were those 6 players if you don't mind BuckMajor?

-- Posted by IndianPride on Thu, Mar 5, 2015, at 6:41 PM
  • *

    Sure no problem:

Diamond Stone #7 in nation (Under Armour AAU)

Chase Jeter #9 in nation Duke commit (Adidas)

Brandon Ingram #12 in nation (believe both Under Armour and Adidas)

Carlton Bragg #21 in nation (big time Adidas AAU team)

PJ Dozier #25 in nation South Carolina commit (Under Armour)

Jawun Evans #36 in nation (Under Armour)

These are players who made the McDonalds AAG but not the JBC. All rankings from ESPN, some services have some guys higher.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Thu, Mar 5, 2015, at 7:01 PM
  • Thanks BuckMajor. Is Jordan brand still under Nike umbrella? If so I guess I understand but still not a total representation of the best players available.

-- Posted by IndianPride on Thu, Mar 5, 2015, at 8:10 PM
  • *

Yes they are still under the same umbrella. I would agree with that. If they would label it as best nike guys who have represented their brand for years, then fine by me. But don't label it as the best players. I honestly believe that shoe brand politics could be worse for college basketball than anything else, even one and done rule or anything you want to throw out.

  • Pat Forde, Yahoo! Sports: "The Kentucky Wildcats dispatched Florida 67-50 on Senior Day, to use the term loosely. On a day that used to leave thousands of fans reaching for the Kleenex back in the days when Kentucky had seniors who actually played, the program honored a class consisting of three walk-ons by letting them play the first 22 seconds. At the first dead ball, John Calipari sent in the real players. But there was something larger to honor than walk-ons in Rupp Arena on this day. An undefeated regular season, authored by a team now 31-0 and steamrolling into the Southeastern Conference tournament in Nashville as the landslide favorite to win the national championship and finish 40-0.

I do think it was pretty classy of Coach Cal to start those guys, and they really enjoyed it.

But yeah senior day at UK is kind of like an oxymoron these days haha!

I do have several updates that I need to catch up on:

UK visited both Thon Maker and Malik Newman last week. Both would be huge pickups for UK. The trendy thing seems to be having Newman to LSU lately.

Many of you I'm sure have heard about the Syracuse really harsh penalties. The biggies (besides 108 vacated losses) are the loss of 3 scholarships over the next 4 years so 12 all together, and the fact that they can only have two coaches out recruiting at the same time over the next 3 years. Those will likely affect the program for years to come. Therefore they probably don't have a scholarship for/nor would he want one, for Thomas Bryant. Could make him more likely to pick UK or Mizzou, even though Indiana seems to be the school that is trending for him lately.

I thought it was super classy of the Ole Miss band to fill in for UK's band at the SEC women's tourney. Lexington got 17 inches of snow and they couldn't make it to the game. So Ole Miss learn UK's fight song and other songs on the spot and filled in for them. That's pretty cool if I do say so myself.

    Mizzou Recruiting

    __________________

Mizzou seemed to be out hitting the recruiting trail hard last week too. They watched Mychal Mulder of Vincennes (how is a great 3 point shooter), he would be a wonderful pick up for Mizzou because they need that. They also watched Russell Woods and Martayvian Payne of John A. Logan. The next day they watched Kyle Meyer (6'10/2015) from Eastern Florida State.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 2:25 PM

Martavian Payne received a scholarship offer from Creighton today. His recruitment is heating up. If you remember he played for Madison Prep. I still think there's a strong possibility he ends up a Mizzou Tiger. They can't miss out on in state guys like this.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Mar 9, 2015, at 8:02 PM
  • The NCAA also said if they have offered scholarships for next year they can wait until next year to implement that penalty. And for Jim Boeheim to drop from 2nd to 6th on the all time Division 1 coach's wins list was crazy.

-- Posted by exzalmanian on Tue, Mar 10, 2015, at 10:47 AM
  • *

The way I heard it was if they had already extended financial aid agreements to those players, then they could wait until next year, but I don't know if they have yet. I still believe this will really effect Thomas Bryant's decision as Syracuse was the family favorite.

I know that is crazy! The self-imposed penalty is the one that gets me. Losing scholarships, taking away wins, restricting coaches, I can understand all of that and how that will discipline the program. But I hate the post season ban for the current players who had nothing to do with these violations. It sucks that players like Christmas have to have their career ended like that when he did nothing wrong.

Calipari was named the NBC Sports National Coach of the Year, the Sporting News National Coach of the Year, and the SEC Coach of the Year.

Willie Cauley-Stein was named the NBC Sports National Defensive Player of the Year and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. He is the 3rd person to win the SEC award under Coach Cal (Davis, and Noel).

Karl Towns was named SEC Freshman of the Year. Towns is the sixth consecutive UK player to win this award (Wall, Jones, Davis, Noel, and Randle).

Devin Booker was named the SEC Sixth Man of the Year after coming off the bench in every game he played in this season.

WCS and Towns were first team all SEC, Booker and Aaron Harrison made 2nd team. All 4 UK Freshman made the all-freshman team. WCS made the all-defensive team.

Kobie Eubanks, a 4 star recruit and one of the best SG left in the 2015 class has Mizzou in his top 5 and may be visiting there soon. He has visited Oregon and Texas, has set one up to UCLA, leaving Mizzou and Georgia left to set up. He has stated that he pretty much wants to start right off the bat.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Mar 11, 2015, at 12:21 PM

-- Posted by exzalmanian on Wed, Mar 11, 2015, at 4:27 PM
  • No he wouldn't actually. Two of Mizzou's best two players are their two SG's. MGC and Wright. Also, Wes Clark was playing SG when he was healthy. Although with College basketball there's not a huge difference in a 2 or 3. They could play Eubanks, MGC, and Wright all 3 at the 2 and the 3 spots.

As he progresses he could be unstoppable.

I honestly thought he impacted the game this year more than Tatum did two years ago when we played him as a Freshman.

He's not the same type player as Tatum but he could really be amazing down the road!

I could definitely see him as a top 20 guy.

  • Once South Carolina eliminated Anderson's team from last week's SEC tournament in Nashville, The Tigers finished the regular season with the fewest wins among the 75 teams that make up the major conferences -- the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac-12 and SEC.

On offense, Mizzou averaged just 60.5 points per game, the team's lowest scoring average since 1951-52. That figure ranked No. 315 out of 351 Division I teams heading into the NCAA Tournament. Mizzou's field goal percentage (40.3 percent) was the team's worst since 1966-67 and ranked No. 301 in Division I.

Maybe Mizzou needs Hush Puppies haha! No in all seriousness, those numbers are pretty dismal. They need some offense (And everything else really). But even a big time guy like Thomas Bryant isn't an offensive juggernaut. He was an impressive player when I watched him, but he wasn't really creating a lot of his own offense, neither was Levi Cook. Both good players, but they are going to have to get someone that can score. Again a three point sniper would really free up some space if Miz was to get one of those real good post guys.

Heard yesterday that Levi Cook who is a major Mizzou target (plays at Huntington Prep where Fulford was) tore his ACL a little bit ago, and he will have surgery now that his season is over. I don't know what kind of recovery time that could have or if it would affect his freshman year of basketball.

So a couple SEC basketball coaches have been fired. Alabama fired Anthony Grant several days ago, and Mississippi State fired Rick Ray this morning (very surprising). In about 30 minutes time MSU has a decommitmeny from ultamitely it's best recruit in 4 star player D'marcus Simonds. He said he committed to MSU because of his relationship with Ray. So that'll be tough. But he could be looking at other SEC schools.

I'll also note that 36-0 is the most consecutive wins to start a season by any Division 1 men's basketball team. Not even the teams that finished the year undefeated ever got to 36 wins.

It looks like former UCLA coach Ben Howland has emerged as the front runner for the Miss St. job.

Tennessee has fired head coach Donnie Tyndall.

I do think the bottom of the SEC will start to rise up though. Ben Howland in my opinion is a great hire for MSU. That guy is a winner and he knows how to recruit. Auburn having Bruce Pearl and a great recruiting class are going to start being really good also I believe.

It will be interesting now to see what moves teams like Alabama and Tennessee make, and if Mizzou can get some nice recruits.

Notre Dame will be a tough matchup though. High powered offense. We will have to utilize our depth and size against them.

5 star big man has committed to Maryland. He was probably the most prominent player on the Under Armour circuit, and he commits to their flagship program.

Stone is No. 4 in 2015 class. Additionally Ivan Rabb No. 6 in 2015, his mom has said that he is down to Cal and Arizona, with a decision probably coming tomorrow. Cal is seen as the hometown favorite. So as you can see the dominoes are starting to fall a bit. Also going to heat up with several high profile players decommiting/transferring with all these coaches getting fired.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Fri, Mar 27, 2015, at 8:08 PM

Stone is one case where the "crystal ball" was pretty wrong. 68% had Wisconsin. Maryland was at 11%, got to think brand loyalty was big with this one.

Also 7 of the 9 uncommitted players in the top 25 are big men (not including Thon Maker who hasn't officially switched classes yet). Stone is the first domino to fall and you have to think many more will follow with spots being taken up by others.

Yeah I love watching Towns play. Many draft experts have now moved him into the No.1 spot over Okafor, which I agree with (and not just because I root for his team). I think Towns has more upside, he's more mobile. Coming out of high school he was known for his great 3 point shooting, and even competed in the McdAA 3 point contest. At UK Cal hasn't wanted him to take 3's and he has maybe shot 2 all year. So in the NBA he can definitely add that to his arsenal. I think Okafor has more offensive moves than him right now, but Towns is considerably better defensively. Also great kid, had higher than a 4.0, wants to be a Dr. after bball, and does a ton of community service.

I don't have a man crush, that is just the team I root for, so I don't really know where your coming from on that. Have rooted for them forever, my grandparents were season ticket holders at Kentucky. That's what people who are fans do, I could say you have a man crush on Coach K. I disagree 100% that he can't coach a lick.

The two coaches aren't really even comparable. You realize that Coach K is almost 70 right!? He has coached at Duke for 35 years! Cal has coached at Kentucky for 6. 6 and 35 are vast differences. The fact that Cal is even being compared to someone who has been with a program for 35 years is a testament to him. Coach K has been 4 national titles, and been there for 35 years! Not the greatest numbers ever. Cal has one in 6 years at Kentucky. So if you even try to run that out if Cal stays as long as Coach K he would have 6 national titles. K has 12 final 4's in 35 years. Cal has 4 final 4's in 6 years. That is pretty remarkable. That extrapolated out would have Cal with 24 final 4's! So the rate Cal is going at would be double what Coach K has done. They both are tied with 3 Naismith Coach of the year awards (again, coach K has been with one program for 35 years). Also Coach K has never beaten a NO.1 seed to win a national title. And I believe until Battier won a title with Lebron and the heat the past two that they won, no Duke player had ever won an NBA championship. None that he had put in the league in 35 years time. So you can find faults with him as well. Saying Coach Cal is not a good coach shows that you don't know much about basketball.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 10:01 AM
  • *

also you make fun of 38-1, but Coach K has never had a 38-1 season. He's never had a season at all where he only lost 1 game. He has two season with only 2 losses, coach cal has 3 seasons with only 2 losses.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 10:20 AM
  • he's not as good of a coach.. hes a much better recruiter but K is a better tactician

-- Posted by RiceHarper on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 11:24 AM
  • *

I would agree with you. I just think it's unfair to compare two blue blood program's coachs, one who has been there 35 years and one who has been there 6 years. Who knows what Cal could do with 29 more years, he might have 15 championships. You never know, but you can't logically compare the two. But at the moment Cal has shown that he has better recruiting skills, and I would say that Coach K is the better tactician (even though I don't know how to put data to compare the two, but imo from the eye test he is better).

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 11:38 AM
  • Coach K may be a better tactician. He probably is. But all this talk about how Calipari is all of the sudden a substandard coach because they lost Saturday is hilarious. The guy can coach his pants off. His team at Memphis was not loaded. Derrick Rose was the only guy that lasted in the NBA. Douglas-Roberts played a little in the NBA. And that team went 38-2 and lost to a Kansas team that was loaded with future NBA players.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 12:10 PM
  • *

Agree 100% jwhitlock, excellent points. Dozier, CDR, none of those guys did much in the NBA. And I mean come on, it's Memphis. Raise your hand if you can name what conference Memphis is even in without looking it up!? (Rhetorical question, but you get my point). And then you have the University of MASSACHUSETTS. Massachusetts for crying out loud! They have been to one final 4 and two elite 8's in the whole history of the school, you know who took them there. Yep, Coach Cal. So give me a break with the "He couldn't get it done at UMass" crap. I mean who could!? Apparently no one. So it's pretty hilarious when people critize that body of work. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't even be talking about Memphis and Massachusetts. So you can hate the guy and talk crap about him, and that's fine. But saying he can't coach is just being a hater for the sake of being a hater, and making yourself look silly at the same time.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 12:25 PM

Now Cal did say at the Naismith Hall of Fame ceremony this morning that he believes a minimum of 5 guys will leave (Towns, WCS, Lyles, Harrison's), and possibly two more (Booker and Johnson). So it will be interesting to see on those last two. I think all 7 go.

From DraftExpress (who is really a pretty good source on the draft, they do a good job of communicating with coaches and NBA execs)

    No.1 - Towns

    No.6 - WCS

    No.17 - Booker

    No.19 - Lyles

    No.39 Johnson

    No.52 An Harrison

    Undrafted - Aa Harrison

  • Geez four #1 picks. Any idea what the most on one team ever is?

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 1:15 PM

Well I think Kentucky has the record for most and most in the first round. The 2010 draft had 5 UK players in the first round (2012 had 4, with Davis and MKG being first 1 and 2 picks from same school), and 2012 Kentucky had 6 guys drafted which was a record. I personally think the Harrisons will both get drafted, so I could see 7 being a new record.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 1:25 PM
  • I would think that the more intelligent stance regarding Calipari and his time at UMASS would be that he greatly elevated the profile of that program on a national level. Yes they had Marcus Camby who was a great college player. But he by no means had a national championship caliber team at any time while at UMASS.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 1:56 PM
  • *

No not at all. Heck I think Camby was the only one drafted or that ever played in the NBA off of that team. That is pretty remarkable to go to the final 4 with only 1 player that would step foot in the big leagues. And that was only Cal's 7th or 8th year coaching too.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 2:16 PM

And on top of that Camby was kind of a knuckle head haha.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 2:20 PM
  • The better comparison between coach k and coach shady would be who runs a cleaner program.

On the one hand you have calishady, who is the only coach EVER to have not one, but TWO final fours vacated. He laughs at the face of the NCAA and doesn't care if he gets caught because he always has one foot out the door just in case they come knocking so he can leave another program to face possible sanctions.

Then you have the "golden boy" coach ksrewaski who lives under his protected blanket of coaching at a prestigious blue blood private school where no investigations take place unless it is by him or his inner circle of minions. He should not only have his final four vacated from 99 with Corey Maggette, but also his 2010 championship with the Lance Thomas jewelry loan fiasco. They both are the same thing that pay pal cal let go on under his watch at umass.

I guess fans only believe what they want to.

Steve Fisher at Michigan has 2 vacated final 4's (92 and 93).

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 2:41 PM
  • DR. Basketball is correct regarding Corey Maggette. He had no business being admitted to Duke. There's also the situation where some Duke players took some summer courses where they never went to class or something of the like.

Calipari isn't innocent by any means, either. I'm not even a Cal fan.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 2:59 PM
  • Chances are Kentucky's banners will be vacated also in a few years. Doesn't really matter what he accomplished at UMASS and Memphis since those seasons don't exist. My thing is if coach K was coaching these teams Cal has had they would have prolly 3 championships.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Mon, Apr 6, 2015, at 2:59 PM
  • BIG you're making an assumption that is based on assumption. Coach K teams have been upset their fair share of times in the NCAA tournament.

Upsets in college basketball happen all the time. How many times has Kansas been bounced early in the tournament with a loaded roster?

We live in an age where winning is greatly underappreciated. A coach like Cal or Bill Self, Tom Izzo, well they ONLY have 1 national championship. That's just a crazy statement. It's a tournament with 68 teams. Doesn't make any sense.

Agreed on Corey Maggette. Also the jewelry deal was pretty weird too. And the seemingly lack of investigation into it even weirder. It looks like Cliff Alexander who sat out Kansas's last few games has a very similar situation. It will be interesting to see if Kansas has to vacate their wins with him, or if they treat it like the Lance Thomas deal.

    UMass's season still exists.

Yeah Duke has kind of been the poster child for getting upset here in recent years (Loved the dancing juggernaut Mercer team).

  • Ur right iit is just an assumption. I just don't think Cal is that good of a coach all that talent year after year and 1 championship. Coach K will get his 5th tonight with the #1 draft pick.

LOL Laettner wasn't on that Miami team, his last season in the NBA was 2005. And speaking of that team, ironically Anderson and Walker were both on that 2006 team, so theres two right there haha! Coached by Pat Riley (who played for Kentucky and won and NBA championship playing with the Lakers). Prince, Mohammad, and Rondo are also current Wildcat NBA Champions. So know your basketball, and don't call me son haha.

  • 1-I agree that coach K is the better coach.

2-I question anyones knowledge of basketball when said individual makes a statement such as "only has ONE national championship" despite having elite talent and as a result is less of a coach.

3-I don't understand much of anything that DEAN has to say.

4- I really hope Wisconsin wins tonight.

  • Another thing with Cal is he will never be anywhere for 32 years cause one of his teams will be in trouble before he gets that much time at 1 school. Duke is the best team this year and did it with 8 scholarship players 4 which are freshman, just goes to show what good coaching can do.

Those 4 Mcdonald's All American freshmen also scored all 37 of Duke's 2nd half points, and I believe 60 of the total 68 points. That just shows how important recruiting is. I also thought Bo Ryan's comments after the game were classless. He might have those thoughts and opinions, but voicing them at that time was inappropriate in my opinion.

And he just recruited the crap out of 5 star Diamond Stone a "rent-a-player" as he calls them for two years, but he couldn't get him. So he's being a little hypocritical, sounds a bit salty because maybe he can't get those players. You think if the package deal of Okafor and Tyus Jones wanted to go to Wisconsin that he wouldn't have taken them haha, give me a break.

Dakari Johnson said that he is gathering information with his family and will make a decision by the end of the week. I think if he goes UK has a good shot with Stephen Zimmerman. We already have the #1 center coming in next year, but Cal has shown he can work with multiple 7-footers.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Apr 7, 2015, at 12:00 PM
  • Wow. Dakari Johnson has no chance of making it in the NBA as is. He has zero game with his back to the basket and is not very athletic.

IP as I said earlier, I really like Draft Express and they are widely considered the best in the biz. They and many other mock drafts have him in the mid 20's (so a first rounder). Now all of that is assuming Duke's Tyus Jones enters the draft. If he doesn't Payne could be early 20's to late teens, but I think Jones will declare for the draft. (if UK's Devin Booker doesn't declare that could move Payne up a spot or two as well). I have heard that Payne signed with Travis King of Relativity Sports.

When Payne announced that he would be entering the draft The OVC Rejoiced "hooorahhh" haha. Then with a big slap in the face Bryce Jones, a 3rd team JUCO All-American commits to Murry State yesterday. With JUCO rankings, he is considered a "4 -star", and one of the top PG prospects in the country. He actually reminds you a lot of Payne, a tad shorter. So that was a huge get for them in my opinion. Pretty amazing program Murry is running getting 4 star prospects and sending Sophomore's to the first round of the NBA draft.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Apr 8, 2015, at 8:24 AM

You and me both! Great article by Rachel and Erin on the home page about the coaching search. Did you see where former Miss St. coach Rick Ray's name was mentioned!? Boy that would be a steal if SEMO could somehow get him. In my opinion, for a few reasons, he was unfairly let go there. He is a good coach and a good recruiter. He had a great class coming in this year (of which many have decommitted, so we won't get to see them play out) and he even already had a 2016 4 star commit. But..... It looks like his MSU base salary was $250,000 (that's just what the school pays) the rest of his salary is funded by a private club, so its not subject to the Mississippi Public Records Act and I couldn't find how much he makes from that. Best guess is he made around 1,000,000 or so a year. So I can't see him taking that big of a pay cut right!? But the other candidates looked formidable as well.

Word is that Mizzou has officially released J Williams III but are blocking him from Big 12, SEC, and specifically Arizona (which is kind of weird). I believe Mizzou feels that Arizona had done some tampering with him, and this was there way to get back at them. Also heard that Mizzou and Arizona play when he becomes eligible, but blocking one school that you play 2 years from now on the off chance that he might go there, I don't know if I'm buying that. I don't know how I feel about the whole "blocking" thing in college basketball.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Apr 8, 2015, at 9:56 AM
  • Disagree on Rick Ray. I would like to see SEMO give one of the other four a shot, especially Isaac Chew. Tim Fuller can recruit, wonder if he can coach?

I have no problem with Mizzou blocking JW3's transfer to certain schools. It's not against the rules so they are just exercising their right as he is exercising his to transfer.

Haha too funny, I actually just replied to you OAH on the semissourian story. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on Ray, I think he's a great guy. Here is what I put on that.

"I would have to totally disagree about Ray. I think he was unfairly let go at MSU. He is a good coach and a good recruiter. When he first got there he still had some knuckleheads that weren't his recruits. Then he was plagued by several of his best players having injuries that have derailed his seasons. Next year he had his best recruiting class since he's been there coming in (many of whom have since decommited, and even had a 4 star great 2016 guard coming in the next year). Mississippi St. is a hard job with a fan base that was dwindling before he got there, and this was going to be the first year he would have a substantial healthy senior class and 4 starters coming back. I just think he deserved one more year."

I can see your point I guess on the transferring thing. I'm still just undecided. I'll have to give it some more thought. I just don't like that coaches can up and leave anywhere they want to go, but players can't. Like I said, I'll have to think on that some more, never really given it much thought.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Apr 8, 2015, at 10:40 AM
  • Yah that is very strange. Ive never heard of Zou blocking any transfer. I guess it shows how cutthroat the the college scene has become. Itsa jungle out there!!

very cut throat indeed, but as OAH it is within the rules. Is the rule appropriate would be my question.

Another one-and-done as UNLV's leading scorer Rashad Vaughn officially announced for the NBA Draft. Could that impact hometown Las Vegas Stephen Zimmermans recruitment. I would really like to see him in Kentucky blue and white.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Apr 8, 2015, at 10:52 AM
  • I believe the rule is appropriate. Too many kids are just running away when things get tough. I also believe that coaches contracts should not be guaranteed past the present year they are coaching. That would check some of their movement as well.

  • Just read that KA may have parted ways with Fuller cuz he felt Fuller spent too much time trying to recruit nationally too many 5star longshots from his Nike camps, allstar games etc. In other words, KA hopes to concentrate on more instate or closer to midwest kids who are more likely to agree to come to Zou. We shall see......

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Thu, Apr 9, 2015, at 12:25 PM
  • Not saying Fuller did anything bad, he's got awesome connections. I think KA has a different philosophy, more like Bo Ryan or the Utah coach.

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Thu, Apr 9, 2015, at 12:28 PM
  • I think Kim Anderson's philosophy is very realistic, given the current state of the program. Recruit the less heralded players that is more likely to stay. Develop him.

  • If you can be a lottery pick then it's a no-brainer. You should enter the draft. However, I'm not sure it says a lot of things, positive, if both Booker and Lyles are really lottery picks. If you understand what I'm saying.

Lots of reports that Duke Freshman Justice Winslow is declaring for the NBA draft.

Caleb Swanigan No. 8 in the nation, just tweeted out that he will announce his college decision tonight at 5. Sounds like he may be headed to Cal. (Where he could team up with Rabb if he goes to Cal).

For what it's worth, the vibe around the area is that Duke is leading the pack for Tatum right now with SLU under heavy consideration. My guess is that Calipari makes a hard late push, but Tatum seems like a Duke guy to me.

Mizzou still appears to be in the picture for Sneed and Cook, the two other 2016 Rivals Top 100 guys from StL.

I agree, from what I've heard Tatum seems like a Duke favorite, gonna be tough to pull him away from the Blue Devils.

Mizzou was super busy this weekend! They had someone at the Nike, Addidas, and Under Armour circuit games. Good to seem them out hitting all the areas.

5 star No. 6 in the nation Ivan Rabb will make his college decision at 7PM this evening. He is down to Cal and Arizona, with many believe he goes to Cal (But it will be interesting to see if he does since Swanigan went to Mich St.) I think he is from California, so I don't know what timezone that 7 pm is, could be 9PM here.

Yeah he really did look good. He has added some bulk since I was able to watch him in person earlier this year, which is good. Some have even projected him as being the No.1 player in the 2016 draft. I think we will have a pretty good class next year, and a couple good pieces coming back (I'm anxious to hear what Poythress does). It's not really looking like we will pick up to many recruits though (might get a grad transfer or decommit guy). So I don't think we will be as good next year, might take a step back from the last couple of years.

Most people can't spell it or say it haha. It is Skal Labissiere. As you said he is from Haiti so he is French and still speaks that quite a bit. I believe it is pronounced La-biss-e-a.(No R sound).

Well here is some news Horatio Webster (who I also got to meet this year, nice guy) Malik Newman's father says that Malik will not take any official visits before making his decision. But I mean heck, it was shaping up that way, I don't know when he was going to be able to fit any in. He has had the most close to the vest, quiet recruitment I have ever seen. I'm not sure I have ever seen a top 5 star recruit never take an official visit. Now he has stepped foot on some campuses though. He has unofficially visited UK for Big Blue Madness, Ole Miss for a football game and a basketball game vs. Florida, Mississippi St. for a football game vs. Auburn, and LSU for the LSU vs. Kentucky game. Weird recruitment, but great player. To be fair to him, he hasn't really had much time. Will be playing in Jordan Brand game this week. It will be interesting to see what develops in coming weeks.

Could be could be, I've thought about that reason. Another couple are busy schedule (but I mean all of these top guys are busy and they are making time). Also he kind of seems shy, maybe he was real nervous about visiting and didn't want to do it (again, can't really be a shy NBA player, or shy at a school like UK. You have a spotlight on you at all times). So I'm saying maybe you are right ciri and he had his mind made up months ago.

Here is something interesting. In the past two days I have heard overseas basketball possibilities for Brown, Newman, Diallo, and Maker. So all of the remaining top 5 except for Zimmerman (of which I've heard a lot more hometown UNLV talk). Malik Newman even said in an interview that he has been approached by several teams in China and Europe with contracts around a million dollars. Normally these also come with $500,00 to a mil shoe deals. So he could leave high school, go overseas for a year, and come home with around 2 million dollars. That is going to be really hard to high school players to start passing up.

One thing I guess I hadn't really thought of much is are these professional foreign teams now recruiting players too!? He said that he had been approached by all of these teams, not sought them out at all. And it also seems like as each year goes by, you are hearing more and more overseas talk. You never used to hear anything of the buzz that you hear now. Now none of those 4 may go over there, but just hearing that 4 of the top 10 could seems like more than usual. One a sidenote, Malik did say today that he will not sing a LOI, only scholarship papers. So maybe that means he is staying here in the states, because I had thought one possibility of him taking no official visits is that he wasn't going to play in college anyway and sign with a foreign club, but hopefully not. Also starting to hear a lot of Mississippi St. buzz for him. (that's where his dad played). Which leads me to another theory that Maybe Malik didn't care much for Rick Ray, MSU got rid of him before he could finish his job, and brought in Howland because they thought it would better get Newman. Just my crazy theory haha.

Another crazy thing I saw, switching to a football recruiting note. Arkansas sent 15 letters to the girlfriend of one of their recruiting targets. I mean come on now, isn't that a little much.

    Agreed Exzal.

Ciri I think they will be okay. They did have a really good recruiting class coming in, but next year is sort of the year I've been waiting on. They had a good class last year, a good one this year, and supposed to be already a REALLY good one next year. We will probably be mediocre again this year, I would like to make a bowl game. We were really close last year.

  • Bill Self calls Carlton Bragg, a 6-foot-9 McDonald's All-American, a "shooting and scoring type of power forward."

On Wednesday, Self could finally call him a member of his Kansas program. Bragg, who committed to KU in early January, signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday morning, officially becoming the first member of the Jayhawks' 2015 recruiting class.

The Bragg file looks like this: A native of Cleveland, Bragg is rated as the nation's 15th best prospect, according to Rivals.com. He averaged 21 points per game during his senior season at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, leading the program to an Ohio state title, and becomes the 37th McDonald's All-American to sign with Kansas.

Former Alabama commit Dazon Ingram said he will make his decision today and that it will be between Kentucky and Alabama. I got to think he is going back to Alabama. I didn't even know we were after him that hard, or that he had been offered a scholarship.

Dazon Ingram has recommitted to Alabama. He had a ceremony and everything with a UK and Alabama hat. So a recruit picks a school over a school who hasn't offered him, I'm not sure how that works. And I don't really understand the whole ceremony hat thing for a recommitment!? Can't you just be like "hey, I'm going to stay with Alabama". I just don't get it really. If you decommit and go elsewhere, fine have the ceremony. But one for going back to the same place!?

    I absolutely agree!

In addition to Kentucky, Dazon Ingram also picked Alabama over the Spurs, the Dream Team, the '87 Lakers, the '85 Bears and the Monstars.

Charlotte big man Mike Thorne has committed to the Illini on his visit there. They did a good job getting him to commit before he ever visited Kansas or UK. John Groce has never had a player drafted into the NBA, could have his first one next year with Thorne.

Also hearing UK has really increased in the recruitment of Diallio. Heading it might be a two horse race between us and home state St. John's. Hopefully we can beat the hole school this time! I think we might be in the top two for Ingram, Newman, Diallio, and Murray. We just have to get in the top 1 now!

Well Thon Maker's guardian/mentor whatever you want to call him said Europe and an overseas pro route is not something they are considering. So that's interesting. I would have said out of the top remaining guys he would have been the most likely to play foreign ball. Not being American in the first place, and not growing up here, it wouldn't have been that big of a transition. He also pretty much said Kansas, Indiana, and UK are the final 3.

Some people are reporting that Malik Newman could be holding a school press conference Friday to announce his college decision. I don't think anyone has any idea where he is going. The home state school and his Dad's school Miss St. has gotten all the recent buzz.

Jaylen Brown is really the only other 5 star recruit that we haven't heard anything about, and no one has. They are saying that he will not return coaches text messages or answer the phone, and no one can get ahold of him. Read an article where they interviewed 3 college coaches that are in his top schools and they have no idea where he is going.

This has been a weird recruiting year. There are some strange cats in this recruiting class haha.

Malik Newman's press conference will be Friday at noon. It will be a closed ceremony not open to anyone, and only live streamed by the local paper where he lives. I think it's down between UK and MSU. As I've said MSU has gotten all the latest buzz. Does the private ceremony closed to the public suggest it could be UK!? You wouldn't want all the Mississippi faithful mad at your press conference that you didn't go to the local school. Or maybe I'm just reading to much into it, Newman is pretty private so it could just be he doesn't want to be around people, in which UK wouldn't be the right place for him anyways.

Haven't even heard a pin drop about SEMO. As Ray said, I think he is focusing on the current guys and not as much on recruiting. But you have to think that with all the AAU starting up heavy now, that he will be out and about soon if he isn't already.

Chaminade's Tyler Cook picked up offer #19 yesterday, from Arkansas. I think Mizzou still has a good shot, but they are going to have to keep working.

Jayson Tatum was visited by Calipari Tuesday and Roy Williams yesterday morning. Tatum then visited SLU yesterday afternoon, where he received an enthusiastic reception from SLU students. My guess is still Duke (probably) or SLU.

No timetable for an announcement, but his father has indicated it could come soon.

In addition to visiting with Tatum. Coach Cal the past few days has had inhome visits with Brandon Ingram in North Carolina, Jamal Murray in Canada, Harry Giles in North Carolina and Cheick Diallo in New York, Malik Monk in Arkansas and Josh Langford in Alabama (where he received a scholarship offer), the Tatum and Kobi Simmons in Georgia. Busy guy!

Tatum, Giles, and Dennis Smith, Jr. are good friends who are apparently (based on tweets and statements by Smith) still talking about playing together in college. If it happened, it would put three Top 5 guys at Duke, Kentucky, or North Carolina, although Kentucky seems to be the least likely destination right now.

-- Posted by unclegrubworm on Fri, Apr 24, 2015, at 7:24 AM
  • *

I could definatley see those three playing together. Out of those 3 I would have to agree that UK would be the least likely place that they would team up at. It will be hard to pull Giles out of North Carolina. Although Tatum and Giles will both be in Lexington this week for the EYLB circuit, and I heard that both could stop by and visit UK. I never underestimate Cal when he can get them both to go look there together. I believe its a rule that you can't visit while the EYLB is going on, but they can all visit Sunday and I know that several are.

Also everyone don't forget that Malik Newman will announce at 12pm CT today. I still believe all signs point to Newman signing with MSU. If that takes place, I believe 4 star JUCO shooting guard Mychal Mulder will sign with UK on his visit this weekend.

You've got to think Calipari will put on the full-court press for those three, but he's behind with Smith, who is another NC kid. Calipari just started recruiting him this month. I'm not sure he has offered him yet, but I'm sure he will if he thinks he has a shot.

Tatum seems to me to be fairly impressionable, which gives Kentucky an outside chance. Some folks around here who know the family thought Kansas was in the driver's seat last summer. Then Calipari seemed to make a strong move early this season. Now Tatum appears smitten with Duke and Krzyzewski.

Cook is a pretty interesting case. He's the most explosive big man to come out of StL in a while (had around 100 dunks this season, many of the highlight reel variety), can use either hand, has a nice release on his jumper, works very hard, and is intelligent and coachable.

But despite all these attributes, he is often pretty easy to defend. Needs to improve his interior moves and shoot the jumper more often. Opinions on him around here are mixed, but I think he'll contribute wherever he goes, even if most of his points come from putback slams and alley-oops.

Remember 5 star Brandon Ingram announces tonight at 5. Hearing he is down to Duke, UNC, and Kentucky. He could be the final piece in one of those 3 teams being the favorite to win the national championship next year. I think he will stay in state and go with one of the NC schools. Many of the "experts" believe he will announce for Duke this evening.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 27, 2015, at 2:57 PM
  • *

I also thought this was interesting to note, 7 of the top 10 players who have committed are heading to UK, LSU, Maryland, California, Marquette, Miss. State & UNLV. What a down right WEIRD group of schools! 4 of them are kids going to the local school. That seems to be a trend this year.

Ingram will probably go with a home state school to make that 5 of the top 8.

Cheick Diallo it looks like will announce tomorrow or Wednesday. His leaders are UK, KU, and St. Johns, with many believing he will head to SJU. So that would be 6 out of 9 heading to the home state school. Odd year for sure.

Sorry Ciri I didn't get to answer your question the other day. There really is no decision deadline, but there are a couple factors to consider. The date to announce to go into the NBA draft is coming up, so some recruits will wait to see who stays and who goes (even though with Yogi Ferrel announcing yesterday that he is coming back to IU, all major players have already made a decision). Then there is summer school to consider. I know several programs, including UK, like to get there guys on campus for summer school and summer workouts. So a high profile recruit would want to make a decision before the school they are considering cuts off summer school enrollment. But really, take Thon Maker for instance, his recruitment could go until he finishes his course work in August, and if he doesn't we could see him making a decision in November of December. So really no deadline, just kind of coaches and school preferneces. But with Ingram coming off the board today, Diallo by Wednesday, really only one top guy (Brown) will be left.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Apr 27, 2015, at 4:24 PM
  • *

Now there are some people saying that St. Johns may be in 3rd place for Diallo, and UK and KU are leading for him. I find that a bit hard to believe, but I guess we will see.

Looks like we might finally have some info on the quietest recruit ever, Mr. wont return a call or text Jaylen Brown. 6'6 combo forward Shaun Kirk committed to North Carolina St. yesterday. But also yesterday he received an offer from UK. So I'm hearing his decision is now in limbo a bit. He didn't sign any type of paperwork yesterday, just a verbal commitment, so he would be able to switch. He is eligible to play this year, I believe he may have reclassified to 2015. He is from North Carolina though, so he might be a hard sway.

Mizzou has offered Troy Baxter. He is a 4 star from Florida in the 2016 class.

Here is a run down from all the Mizzou stuff I gathered from the 3 major shoe company events they were at this week.

Mizzou watched 5 star 2017 SG Victor Baily Jr., son of Mizzou wide receiver Victor Baily.

3 star PG Eric Hester from Florida in the 2016 class.

3 star PG C.J. Walker from Indiana in the 2016 class.

4 star SG Curtis Jones from Virginia in 2016. I think they have a good shot at him. He's another one of those Huntington Prep guys.

3 star 2016 small forward Xavier Sneed from Hazelwood in St. Louis.

4 star 2016 PF Tyler Cook from Chaminade in STL.

4 star 2017 PG Nojel Eastern from Illinois. (I believe he got hurt pretty bad during one of the games)

5 star 2017 PF Jeremiah Tilmon from East STL.

Sounds like Shaun Kirk visited NC State yesterday and just committed on the spot. Then when he got home before news of his commitment spread Calipari was calling and offered him a scholarship. His high school coach said he got home and "then here comes something bigger and better". Sounds like he is really torn and would feel bad decommiting, but also knows he should have gone home and thought it over a while instead of accepting the scholarship at NC State on the spot. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

And earlier I had said the confidence of landing Diallo might not be high. But the more I think about it, I think that we be the confidence on Jaylen Brown might not be very high, since Kirk and Diallo would play very different positions. I think Brown goes to Michigan.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Apr 28, 2015, at 11:16 AM
  • *

Ahhh something even more interesting that I should have realized. Shaun Kirk plays on the same AAU team as one of the top 2016 targets Dennis Smith Jr. who we have discussed on here previously as looking like a favorite to stay in North Carolina. So maybe using a middle of the range player like Kirk to help draw Smith Jr. cause I understand they are good friends.

UK and staff really really made it a priority to watch Tatum and Giles last weekend. Tatum was watched at one point by UK assistant Kenny Payne, Booker, Cauley-Stein, Poythres, Lee, and Julius Randle. The whole staff including Cal (and UK players) watched his other games. They also made it a big priority to watch 5 star guard from Arkansas Malik Monk. They were at all of his games.

It looks like Cheick Diallo has committed to Kansas. Wish we could have gotten him too. But it sounded like people around him wanted him to go somewhere where he could be "the guy". Wasn't going to get that at Kentucky. But we already had two guys at his position, and we just got what we needed, a perimeter shooter. I think we may add Kirk as well.

Levi Cook (a Huntington Prep guy) who I thought Mizzou had a great shot at will be taking a post grad year next year instead of enrolling in a college. He tore his ACL and is under going rehab, so I'm guessing that is part of the reason he will take an extra year. As long a Fulfords there they still have a great shot with him.

Curtis Jones, who I mention previously as thinking he could wind up at Mizzou, is starting to hear from so really big schools. Just visited Louisville and is now hearing from UNC after his great weekend play. He said Maryland will def be in his top 5, and they seem to be the leader. He said he hears from Maryland, Georgetown, Missouri, Wake Forest, and Indiana the most.

Additionally it appears Shaun Kirk's crystal ball is now at 83% Kentucky.

Jonny David, a 6'2 point guard from Pennsylvania will walk on with Kentucky. He averaged 18.5 points last season for Mount Lebanon High School in Pittsburg. Jonny's father played for Coach Cal when he was an assistant at Pitt. David did have offers from some Ivy league and Patriot league schools, but just really wanted to come to UK. In addition to losing the 7 NBA guys, UK is also losing all 3 of their walk-ons, so they have spots for some walk-ons.

Calipari and Kenny Payne called yesterday and offered 2016 5 star Miles Bridges also of Huntington Prep a scholarship. He had cut his list a month or so ago to 5 schools, and still had UK on the list despite not having an offer. He really wanted one and was hoping he would get it soon. Going for 41 points in game this past weekend in front of Cal helped to do that. I got to watch him during his high school year, and he's a beast!

It looks like yesterday the NCAA busted 5 coaches for violating the "bump" rule at IMG Academy. They had NCAA people posing as parents watching the practice. What are they the CIA now haha!? For those that don't know, right now is a dead period and college coaches can not have any unscheduled contact with players or parents. They try to get around this by just happening to "bump" into the player or parent, but a bump is still an NCAA infraction. I guess this may have been part of what SEMO women's coach Ty Margenthaler (sp) got in trouble for when he bumped into those two recruits at a restaurant.

On another note, IMG Academy seems to be getting pretty shady. Could they be next year's Prime Prep!?

Also it should be noted that as far as the top 2015 guys go, Jaylen Brown is now on the clock. The media seems to think he is down between Michigan and UK. He has said repeatedly that he wants to go to an Addidas school, so you have to think Michigan would be the pick, also has family in Michigan. But hey maybe he will shock everyone.

Other remaining top 100 guys are:

    Thon Maker

    Tevin Mack

    Georgios Papagiannis

    Kobe Eubanks

    Kenny Williams

    Marcus Lovett

Additionally, it looks like Florida's Donovan is head to coach the Oklahoma City Thunder. He has 4 commits, all 4 stars, so who knows if they will stick with the program. One is KeVaugh Allen who those that attend Riverbend would have seen a couple years ago on the North Little Rock squad.

6'8" Vianney freshman Carteare Gordon was offered today by Mizzou, according to Vianney coach Kevin Walsh. Competition will be fierce a couple of years from now. A Gordon-Thatch package would be nice.

Sorry for all the posts. Another Missouri freshman, Tolton's Jontay Porter, has also been offered by Mizzou, according to a tweet from his brother, Michael Porter, Jr.

Yep I had those 3 as well, as well as several others Mizzou has offered this week (many are ones I posted earlier that they watched this weekend)

Well the recruitment of Jaylen Brown who some recruiting services have as No.1 in the nation has been interesting the past two days. He's been an Addidas lean for a long time. Then yesterday it was confirmed he cut Kansas from his list (the only other Addidas school besides Michigan). So he is down to 4. This would help to confirm that many believe he is really down to UK and Michigan with Mich the heavy favorite. Well today UK has seemed to really gain some steam. Then it was reported that Brown unfollowed Michigan's assistant coach on Twitter (take that for what it's worth, but why would you unfollow one of your coaches if you were going there?). Then reports came out that the University of Michigan are in talks with Under Armour becoming their next sponsor. Now Brown's student section twitter has released that Brown will announce his decision tonight after the senior banquet at his school. It hasn't been confirmed yet if the student twitter is real or got hacked or something.

Brown has committed to California hahaha. All the recruiting guy missed on that one! What a weird recruiting class. Cal has 1 title, 65 years ago. Gotta see if the talent they have on paper can get put to work.

Missouri just offered another StL freshman, Whitfield's Torrence Watson, a quick and lanky 6'3" guard with range. Kansas State has also made him an offer, according to KSDK's Frank Cusumano.

Anybody heard anything about Mizzou and Thatch? Surprised he hasn't gotten an offer.

-- Posted by unclegrubworm on Mon, May 4, 2015, at 10:51 AM
  • Thatch is a inbeteener, don't know if i would take a chance on him yet at that level.

Actually Thatch was just offered by Mizzou today.

Here are the others that I have gathered this past week that Mizzou has offered.

2017 4 star guard Quade Green

    2017 4 star Nojel Eastern

2016 4 star center Joey Brunk

2017 4 star guard Trae Young

2016 3 star guard CJ Walker

    2018 Carte'Are Gordon

    2018 guard Courtney Ramey

Also 2016 Tyler Cook will cut his list to 6 schools. Mizzou leads his crystal ball with 100% of the votes, although there aren't many.

So with the ones that I mentioned and UGW mention, Mizzou offered 5 2018 guys, Thatch, Watson, Porter, Ramey, and Gordon. That is a crap load of freshmen! Mizzou must really be getting out and trying to establish some early connections are get some 4 stars in the program. Got to commend them for that.

Very strong freshman class on this side of state.

    Those guys are legit.

Slimmer pickings in this year's soph class in StL on this side of the River, but there are some players in that class in the Metro East, including ESL's Tilmon and Althoff's Jordan Goodwin.

Of course, Michael Porter, Jr. is the big fish in the state in that class.

-- Posted by unclegrubworm on Mon, May 4, 2015, at 12:08 PM
  • I agree, that's good they're getting on them early but if Mizzou and KA don't show steady improvement by the time those guys senior year he prolly won't even be there.

That's one of the things I was thinking too BIGELW. Even if 4 years from now if he is questionable to be there, it won't be good for recruiting. Similar to the problems that Tenn has had these past couple of years, uncertainty in the future of the head coach.

Mizzou offered 2017 F Wyatt Yess of Parkway West.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, May 4, 2015, at 7:36 PM
  • *

That one surprises me a little bit. Yess is 6'7" with a nice jump shot. Not especially quick, however. He does work very hard to improve his game both on the hardwood and in the weightroom. Has gotten a little more explosive but will not give you a lot of highlight reel dunks. Team-oriented guy and a pretty tough kid. Was West's leading wide receiver last season.

  • I think bigelw is a hatter. Why wouldnt u take a chance on a freshman who scored 500 points in one year. And made All district and All Conference. Your insain.

-- Posted by therealfan on Tue, May 5, 2015, at 6:44 PM
  • Honestly. Mizzou really seems to be reaching a little. Already feels like desperation to make an impact on the PR side. I watched Yess play many times and unless he gains a lot of weight I just cant see him as at the SEC level.

And sadly the Brown commit to Cal is unfortunate. Would have loved to see him at UK. Beast!

BIG news. 5 star big man Caleb Swanigan has de committed from Michigan St. He never signed a LOI, but I didn't think it was a big deal because he said from the beginning of his recruitment that he wasn't going to (many 5 stars this year haven't). Purdue seems to be the favorite to land him. His guardian played football a Purdue. I personally think he teams up with the two 5 stars at California. UK was in his finalists, UK sure they'll try to get involved.

Whatcha know about St. Louis Christians Anthony Pratt Unclegrub!? He just committed to Eastern Kentucky.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Thu, May 7, 2015, at 8:02 PM

Not much help here, Buck. St. Louis Christian is not a MSHSAA school. So I don't see them much.

I saw Pratt just once, and that was when he was a sophomore, against Deion Sanders' Prime Prep Academy, which was loaded with high D1 talent. Pratt and the rest of the team held up very well, but I can't recall too many specifics. He's an athletic 6'6" or 6'7" guy. From what I read, his skills have developed the last couple of years.

St. Louis Christian plays a national schedule that features several elite teams. So he's faced tough competition.

I think he also played for the Eagles with Tatum and Company when he was a sophomore.

    C. F. would know more about him that I do.

Gotcha! Maybe he will be able to give us some info. I believe that was Eastern Kentucky's new coach's first commitment.

Sidenote: I got to watch Prime Prep play last year and they were fun to watch! I don't know where all their potential D1 guys will play next year with the school shutting down.

Mizzou got a nice commitment on Friday--K. J. Walton, an explosive 6'4" guard from Brownsburg, IN. He was one of the top guys left in the 2015 class. Can get the ball to the hoop but is apparently not a consistent outside shooter. Rated a 4-star guy. Very athletic. May be the lockdown defender they've needed for a while.

Big weekend for Jayson Tatum and the StL Eagles in Houston. Went 4-0 to run Nike EYBL record to 9-3.

Tatum shot just one 3-pointer (and missed) in all 4 games but averaged nearly 27 ppg and 10 rpg. Was 48 of 53 from the line. That's where he makes his living.

Talk is that Duke is still the leader but that Kentucky is not out of the picture.

I believe in the last couple of days Mizzou has offered 2015 guard David Sloan (who I believe plays the STL Eagles, but I didn't look it up), and 2017 SG Jordan Goodwin.

Yes, Sloan and Goodwin are both juniors-to-be who play for the Eagles 17U EYBL team.

Sloan is from Campbellsville, Ky. Has drawn interest from Louisville but apparently does not have an offer from them. Very quick 5'9" PG.

Goodwin plays for Belleville Althoff, which will compete with Chaminade to be the #1 team in the StL area next season. They have the key parts back from their #2 finish in Illinois Class 3A last season. Not very big, but man, are they entertaining. They will play Chaminade in the Highland Shootout.

Goodwin also has an offer from Illinois. He's considered one of the very best juniors in the state.

    A few things today:

It looks like one time Michigan State commit 5 star Caleb Swanigan is heading to Purdue. I stated I thought it would be California, but I didn't realized Cal didn't have an available scholarship and it looks like one wasn't going to free up for him. His guardian attended Purdue. What a weird weird deal. Mich St to Purdue? I read an interview his guardian just gave and he said that Purdue gives Caleb everything he needs basketball wise. He then went on to say that Purdue had basically the same record as one of the final 4 teams last year..... Michigan State. Ummmm, he was commited to THAT SCHOOL. That statement makes absolutely no sense to me, and those are the only two reasons he gave. Regardless, huge get for Purdue, possibly the best recruit they've ever gotten.

It was reported around midnight last night that 5 star 2016 Canadian guard Jamal Murray was on an official visit to UK. Nobody knew about this until late last night, which is unsual. There is a strong possibility that Murray reclassifies to 2015, and that could potentially be a huge get for UK.

Regarding SEMO, I think they got a nice get in Santee. Odessa was recruiting NMCC's Willie Jimerson pretty hard to I became familiar with their program, and he seemed like a good one. I'm not real familiar with his UMASS days. Nor am I real familiar with SEMO's offer commit yesterday 6'7 Jaylin Stewart. I do know he signed his LOI today. But it looks like Ray is really hitting the recruiting trail and getting the team some much needed size. They also seem like high character guys. I like it!

You guys who are into college basketball need to look into this new team called the Las Vegas Dealers. Some millionaire guy has created this team and is offering McDonald's All-Americans $1 million to come play on this team for a year instead of college, and then go into the NBA. This team would play like an international schedule against European teams and others I believe. At first I heard that no one was really concerned with it, but now I'm hearing that there are a few burger boys that are interested in playing for the team. You Mizzou fans may be interested in this too because it looks like Tim Fuller will be the Director of Basketball Operations for the team. Could teams like this one be the next big hit to college basketball!?

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Fri, May 29, 2015, at 9:37 AM
  • Cant see how the millionaire dude's gonna make any money Buck. This will only affect schools like UK, KU, Duke, etc. Not too many schools are loaded with one and dones. It will actually level the playing field a tiny bit. Still dont think its a moneymaker for the owner though.

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Fri, May 29, 2015, at 11:09 AM

I can't either to tell you the truth. And that's a good point on who it would affect. Unless he starts trying to grab anyone he can get. The guys name is Cerruti Brown. I've heard some of the top McDAA's have been offered up to $1.2 million. From what I've read they will play 35 games in Las Vegas and then to a 15 game tour in Europe. And many that I've heard talk about this team reflects what you said Ciri. Where will the money come from to keep it going? This guy might have the upfront start up costs to sign the guys, but shoe companies aren't going to want a part of this, ticket sales aren't going to keep it going, and it won't really have a big fan base with a crazy schedule and players that are has beens or guys that are there one year. But he is pretty much guaranteeing that he will have at least one MCDAA's, I'm anxious to see who that might be.

A couple of UK notes. It's looking more and more like a possibility that UK's 2016 Austrialian commit Tai Wynyard could join UK in December of this year. He is progressing nicely and his body is getting better. He would be a much needed addition since we missed out on several big men this year (to Purdue, UNLV, California, and Marquette. Who would have guessed haha?)

Also 2016 5 star Jamal Murray visited UK a couple of weeks ago. Many see him reclassifying and joining a team this year. He plays in Canada and could certainly do that. Many believe UK and Oregon are his top 2. He had a visit planned to Oregon this past weekend but canceled it. I don't know if that is a good sign for UK or not. I'm not going to run with it like some Kentucky fans are. But I have heard that he will make a decision this month.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Jun 1, 2015, at 10:12 AM
  • The fact JW3 would even consider Kansas makes him a POS.

He announced today he has chosen Gonzaga. Good riddance to him as far as I'm concerned.

KA better get his but in gear though. This Tiger team sucked beyond sucked last year and we will not be any better (maybe even worse) this coming year.

-- Posted by exzalmanian on Mon, Jun 1, 2015, at 1:39 PM

Yeah saw where he landed at Gonzaga. The Zags will be decent this year, and he would have been a nice addition, but sitting out a year I don't know how they will be next year losing Wiltjer. Is he from that part of the country? Kind of an odd choice if he isn't.

It will be interesting for Mizzou this next year. I think they might be better shooters next year with their additions, but I still think they won't get over the hump until they can add a dominant big guy. People kind of like to poke fun at SEC basketball, but hey, they are on the rise! Look at the quality of coaches that have been added at Miss St., Auburn, and Alabama (and those are 3 lesser teams normally). Then you have UK and Florida who are pretty good year in and year out, and LSU has like a top 5 recruiting class with the No. 1 player in the nation, and Vandy, Tenn, and Texas A&M ( good recruiting class) should all be solid. So the SEC is getting increasingly tougher.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Jun 1, 2015, at 1:55 PM
  • I can't believe the Vegas team would be sustainable in the long haul. Sounds like a guy with more money than common sense. Some kid is gonna make bank though and sadly that is what a lot of it has come down to.

Gotta agree with Buck. The shoe companies won't touch it with all their deals with college ball.

Will be interesting to see who they can get but unless this guy is Ballmer rich I cant see it being a big impact on college ball long term.

Yeah definatley a guy looking to just spend some money. Read another deal where he said he and his partners have 10 million to spend. Sounds like a lot, but that will go pretty quick (Espicially if your signing guys $1.2 mil a pop). So therefore he's not Ballmer rich, and I agree I don't think it will impact it that much hopefully.

Yeah Ciri that transfer is Dwight Coleby. He's decent big man. He'll have two years left after sitting out this year. From what I heard he was not pleased with his minutes at Ole Miss, I can't see him getting that many more minutes at Kansas.

5 star Canadian guard Jamal Murray has reclassified to 2015 and committed to Kentucky! RIP to Calipari's recruiting slump: April 2015-June 23rd, 2015. So 3 of the top 13 players committed to UK. Not bad for what many considered a down recruiting year.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Jun 24, 2015, at 6:08 PM
  • Buck. What do you think Murray going to UK will do for our chance to land Thon and possibly his brother?

-- Posted by IndianPride on Wed, Jun 24, 2015, at 11:08 PM
  • *

Well in my opinion the Murray commitment in and of itself won't do a lot. I should have put this on here, but Maker said earlier this week that he is going to remain in the 2016 class and play another year of prep basketball with his brother. Jamal Murray pretty much said he wants to go to UK to try and become the No.1 pick, and even the announcers last night on Sports Centre eh (my French Canadian accent lol) were even talking to him about being in the draft next year and standing were the guys will be standing tonight. (he is projected in the first round next year already).

So all that being said, they might not step on the court together again. I guess it would help in the sense that they are probably good friends and Murray can communicate to the Makers that it is a great place to play. Although with Arizona St. hiring Maker's guardians practically best friend as an assistant coach, all signs point to him going to Arizona St. at the moment. And he keeps insisting that he wants to play college ball, but I'm still not sold we ever see him step on a college basketball court. But I think Kentucky is in his top 3 with ASU and Indiana, and I never count Cal out when UK is in someones top 3 schools. So we shall see.

On a side note I did get to see Murray and Maker's Orangeville Prep team play this year, and they are both excellent players! Kentucky is getting a great player in Murray. And Maker just played in a tournament this weekend, and I watched pieces of it and it is the best he's looked ever really. He played so much more aggressive and has added some muscle. I think he even got MVP honors. Another year of school and he might be really dominant next year.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Thu, Jun 25, 2015, at 10:18 AM
  • Hey Buck how many more 2015 scholarships ya got left? Its gotta be a bit tough for Cal to project future scholly availability, I would assume he sometimes hasta retract some of his offers?

    -- Posted by cirithungol17 on Thu, Jun 25, 2015, at 12:21 PM
  • *

I think they have a couple left actually, but that is the last guy they were recruiting so they should be done now. In the past if they have extra they have put walkons on scholarship (Track coaches son EJ Floreal got put on last year, and I can imagine will this year too). Oh yeah I can't hardly keep track of it, and with not knowing how many guys stay or go it's really hard. I think that's why you hardly ever ever ever see Cal offer freshman or sophomores, it's just to far ahead. And years like 2013 where they had like 8 commitments, I'm sure they probably did retract offers. But I've heard stories that he tells recruits that very thing, if they want to play at UK go ahead and commit because you don't want all the schollies to be gone.

Montaque Gill-Caesar is transferring from Mizzou. Said he wants to transfer to a school "where I am most comfortable". The decision was mutual I have heard. Big blow for Mizzou, I thought he had potential.

  • He's a head case. I would love to see us get unselfish team oriented players, a la Wisconsin or Butler or Wich State. Tough to do in this day and age of me-first attitudes. Hope KA doesnt panic and put all his energy into recruiting so called blue chippers thatll never give Zou a sniff. Needs to recruit loyal players who have a spine.

  • Good riddance. Any kid that transfers this time of the year probably is full of issues.

I also agree with ciri. Let's get some loyal kids!

Yeah weird time of year to transfer.

I kind of guessed that. I remember his junior year at HP about 3 years ago, because the UK writers were constantly talking about him, UK leading big in his crystal ball and such. Even a running joke about how UK was for sure going to get him because he had a hyphenated name with a the top recruits Kentucky had with the hyphen. Then his summer between his Jr. and senior year I remember and interview with him saying he hadn't had contact with UK coaches in like 2 months. Which is really weird, I imagine Calipari and staff as being one of those text you every other day coaches for top recruits. So I knew they must have seen something they didn't like. But yeah you don't want a guy like that on your team.

I can see why you'd keep that quiet on a basketball board. We haven't had a whole lot to cheer about in many a moon. Haven't been to Columbia since 2003. The Colts beat PB in the Class 5 third place game that year. Some earnings power on the court in that one--Tyler Hansbrough and Max Scherzer.

-- Posted by unclegrubworm on Mon, Jul 27, 2015, at 12:56 PM
  • Oh wow i didnt realize Scherzer was a hoopster. Yah PCH hasnt rung up much in the way of state championships but its still near and dear to my heart!! I played a year with Dave Silvestri back in the day, he did well at Zou and played in the majors a couple years.

Zou looks to sign former UALR head coach as an admin hoops assistant. Big day for Zou hoops.

Mizzou has offered Gorjok Gak and Romello White today.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Jul 27, 2015, at 4:30 PM
  • Gorjok Gak? Which Dr Seuss book was he in?

It was either the "The Lorax" or "Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose", I don't remember which one.

3 star 6'11 big man. A little skinny with good rebounding a defense skills. Raw offensively. Mizzou one of the first bigger schools to offer, so they might have a shot getting in early.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Mon, Jul 27, 2015, at 9:27 PM
  • I knew i'd heard that name somewhere Buck!! Its from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish!! And I quote:

" At our house, we play out back.

We play a game called Ring the Gak."

    Well played Mizzou-RAH!!!!

A lot of buzz about how Harry Giles may not seem as much of a lock for Duke as he once did. I don't know if that is stemming from him moving out of North Carolina to play his senior season or what, but Kentucky still remains a contender.

Arkansas is also falling apart before our eyes. I'd say Anderson doesn't have long left there. Best player goes to the draft, second best player who was going to be best player this year gets bad advice and declares for draft and now has blown out his knee. Next best player and best incoming recruit Kapita (who Mizzou got after hard) doesn't qualify academically and is headed to prep school likely to never touch their campus. And their next 3 best returning players and hooked up in some illegal currency ring likely to be off the team. So Ark getting Malik Monk doesn't seem likely, might be good for UK who many believe makes up the other half of his top 2.

  • Poor poor Mike. Hard for us Zou fans to feel any sympathy for our last two knucklehead coaches who flew the coop like two dudes committing grand theft auto. What goes around, comes around. Haith'll be gone before long, now that he has to rely on his own recruits and, GASP, his own coaching skills.
